Key Concepts of Chess - Pawn Structures Vol.1 and 2
In this two-part course the emphasis will be on typical pawn-structures.
In this video lesson, we will look at the background of the Taimanov Sicilian. The discussion will include several variations and possibilities, and I will try to clarify the ideas behind it.
In my opinion, you do not learn an opening by memorizing variations - you also have to understand the moves. When strong players prepare for their games and when they play, they sometimes have beautiful concepts in mind, and this helps them to steer the game in their favour.
Studying and verbalising these plans can help you to understand the typical structures of an opening. In today's vido we will highlight the basic principles of the Taimanov variation while offering an overview of the most important ideas for both players.
The diagram belows shows a well-known position from the Taimanov Sicilian, and here White has a number of possibilities. 11.Qd2-e1 is one of them. Do you see - apart from the strategic idea behind this - which tactical possibility White suddenly has after 11.Qe1? And how should Black parry this threat?
