3/18/2024 – Endgame training on the computer is much easier and more efficient than it used to be. The quickest way to learn is with a good coach. Surya Ganguly was Anand’s second for a long time, but he is also great at teaching the basics, as he does with his course “Endgame Essentials”. Unmissable!
3/16/2024 – The African Individual Championships 2024 kicked off on March 13 in Accra, Ghana, the city that recently hosted the chess competition of the 13th African Games. Both the open and the women’s championships are 9-round Swiss events with a classical time control. The events run until March 20.
3/14/2024 – WGM Mitra Hejazipor was born on 19 February 1993 in Mashdad, Iran, and became Iranian Women's Champion in 2012. But she left her country because she did not want to wear the hijab, or headscarf, and went to France, where she became a French citizen in 2023. She also became the French women's champion that year. She recently played in the Werder Bremen Jubilee Tournament, which ended last week. 3/10/2024 – The 57th edition of the Biel Chess Festival will take place on July 13-26 with its usual mix of elite tournaments, amateur events and attractive side activities. Remarkably, this edition will see two Triathlons taking place simultaneously: the Masters and the Challengers. Praggnanandhaa, Vincent Keymer and Le Quang Liem are the top seeds in the main event.
3/10/2024 – The Swiss Queens Wednesday Series, launched in partnership with the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is an initiative aimed at boosting women’s participation in chess. With tournaments every Wednesday, the series has attracted some of the strongest players from around the world. Five editions were played in February, with Martha Fierro, Valentina Gunina, Anastasia Bodnaruk, Gunay Mammadzada and Polina Shuvalova emerging victorious in each of them.
3/7/2024 – Nodirbek Abdusattorov is the sixth champion of the prestigious chess festival. In the process the the 19-year-old Usbek grandmaster rose to the fourth position in the world live ranking, ahead of the reigning world champion Ding Liren. 3/6/2024 – Yevhenii Yelieiev is an International Master, German U25 Champion, and a short while ago he invited the public to join him on his "Journey to Grandmaster" on YouTube. As part of this journey he offers training and training advice and also checks training materials. In a recent video he wondered whether "Do you really need to buy ChessBase in 2024?" - and answered this question with a resounding "Yes".
2/29/2024 – At 90, you must be the oldest chess grandmaster in the world, or so we thought when we honoured Klaus Darga on his 90th birthday. But that's not true. German chess journalist Stefan Löffler, editor of the "Schachkalender", knows better. There are even older ones. This is also due to the fact that FIDE recently made Andreas Dückstein from Austria (photo: Martin Stichlberger) an honorary grandmaster.
2/27/2024 – Lela Javakhishvili emerged as the winner of the Georgian Women’s Championship 2024. One of the most successful Georgian chess players, Lela clinched her fifth national title. As is often the case in Georgian Women’s championships, it was a very close race among the top-rated players and the members of the very strong national team. Nino Batsiashvili and Meri Arabidze finished in second and third place, respectively.
2/26/2024 – The Svetozar Gligoric Trophy is an award given by FIDE to the individual who displays exemplary behaviour promoting the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship in chess. Proposals for nominations from Continental Federations, National Federations, and FIDE Commissions shall be submitted to the Gligoric Trophy Award Commission of FIDE no later than 10 August 2024.
2/23/2024 – The Cuban Championships, open and women’s, took place on February 5-17 in two different parts of the Caribbean island: Holguín and Pinar del Río, respectively. Both events were decided on tiebreakers, with Ernesto Quesada and Lisandra Ordaz emerging victorious.
2/23/2024 – The Grand Chess Tour announced today the players selected to compete in the full 2024 tour. Joining the likes of Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave are three rising stars who had not been ‘regulars’ in the tour previously: Gukesh D (pictured), Praggnanandhaa R and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. 2/23/2024 – Around the turn of the century, there was worldwide interest regarding chess confrontations between humans and computers. One of the last top-notch events featuring such a battle was seen in 2005, when three strong grandmasters played a match against three of the best engines in the world. In the end, Hydra, Junior and Fritz defeated Alexander Khalifman, Ruslan Ponomariov and Rustam Kasimdzhanov by an 8-4 score. The match took place in Bilbao, and saw Ponomariov beating Fritz in a memorable encounter.

2/18/2024 – The FIDE Council awarded the title of Honorary Grandmaster to Andreas Dueckstein (Austria) and Iivo Nei (Estonia) for their consistently strong results in the 1950s-70s. Nei was an 8-time Estonian who tied for first with Paul Keres in Beverwijk (later Hoogovens).
