Carissa Yip grabs second U.S. women’s title after dramatic final round

10/19/2023 – At some point, it seemed like the title was going to slip away from her hands, but things finally went Carissa Yip’s way on Tuesday, as she claimed outright tournament victory to become a 2-time U.S. women’s chess champion. The 20-year-old lost her final-round game against Ruiyang Yan (her first loss of the event), and saw title contender Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova failing to find a drawing line and eventually losing to Jennifer Yu. Qatar Masters: Karthikeyan stuns Carlsen, joins the lead

10/19/2023 – Karthikeyan Murali became the third Indian player to ever beat Magnus Carlsen in a classical chess game, as he defeated the former world champion with the black pieces in round 7 of the Qatar Masters. Thanks to the upset win, Karthikeyan joined a 6-player leading pack with two rounds to go in Doha. Among the eight players standing at a half point distance are rating favourites Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. 10/17/2023 – Fabiano Caruana successfully defended his title at the 2023 U.S. Championship in Saint Louis. The 31-year-old beat Abhimanyu Mishra to secure tournament victory with a round to spare, and thus claimed his third U.S. title — Caruana won the championship in 2016, 2022 and 2023. Colchester celebrates chess hero Jonathan Penrose

10/17/2023 – The English town of Colchester has opened its first chess park in memory of Dr Jonathan Penrose OBE, a Colchester-born double grandmaster who dominated British chess in the 1950s and 60s and went on to become the highest rated correspondence chess player in the world. Due to the controversy surrounding Magnus Carlsen’s defeat and ensuing social media post on Thursday, the organizers put forth new anti-cheating regulations.
