Game of the Week #639

There are still plenty of games from the Olympiad to take a closer look at, but we decided to pick one from the German Bundesliga, which officially kicks off tomorrow. The coming season could be the strongest ever, with all the current top ten players registered: Carlsen, Nakamura, Erigaisi, Caruana, Gukesh, Abdusattrov, Firouzja, Wei Yi, Nepomniachtchi and So.

A few matches were played before the official start to avoid a clash with the Global Chess League, and in one of these matches two experienced Dutch grandmasters met in Germany: Erik Van den Doel and Loek van Wely.

While Erik tends to play quieter openings these days, he took up the challenge of a very sharp Najdorf and came up with an amazing concept that you may have never seen before.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
