Game of the Week #640

Like last week we decided to select a game from the German Bundesliga as our Game of the Week. The beautiful chess club HSK from Hamburg (which was founded in 1830!) sensationally beat the current champion Viernheim with 5-3.

The team from Hamburg was lower rated on all eight boards, but scored two wins and six draws. Both wins were scored by homegrown players: GM Luis Engel and IM Julian Kramer. Since Julian first crossed the 2500 mark with his win against Konstantin Tarlev, we will study that game.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week's show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
