New York 1924, Round 19: Dr. Lasker defends his lead

5/23/2020 – After 19 of 22 rounds Emanuel Lasker, José Raúl Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine lead at the New York Tournament 1924. All three won in round 19: Emanuel Lasker won with Black against Edward Lasker, Capablanca refuted Tartakowers dubious King's Gambit and Alekhine defeated Dawid Janowsky. New York 1924, Round 19: Four wins, one draw

Edward Lasker is certainly not a chess player who often blunders and against his distant relative, former World Champion Dr. Emanuel Lasker, Edward Lasker did not lose because he made one big mistake but because he made too many small ones.

Capablanca played with Black against Dr. Savielly Tartakower and won a straightforward and smooth game. The whole game is a lesson how to refute an artificial opening.

 

World Champion José Raúl Capablanca

Alexander Alekhine played with Black against Dawid Janowsky and showed why passed pawns can be powerful. However, Janowsky's careless defense helped.

In the previous rounds Richard Reti played some remarkable games and for a long time he was among the top players but then lost steam. And in round 19 he suffered a terrible loss against Frederick Yates.
