1/9/2023 – From Friday, 6 January, to Sunday, 8 January, the 32nd Keres Memorial was held in the Estonian capital Tallinn and featured a blitz and a rapid tournament. GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy from Ukraine won the blitz, GM Yuriy Kuzubov (also from Ukraine) won the rapid event.
1/7/2023 – Lithuanian grandmaster Sarunas Sulskis was the only player, out of the 95 participants, to achieve an 8/10 score at the 96th edition of the traditional Hastings Masters. In second to fourth place finished Bence Korpa (Hungary), Oleg Korneev (Spain) and Mark Hebden (England), each with 7½/10. 12/21/2022 – On Tuesday, the ten participants of the Gashimov Memorial played the last three rounds of 15+10 rapid chess in Baku. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who had grabbed the lead early on, scored a win and two draws to remain atop the standings. Paco Vallejo and Rauf Mamedov shared second place, two points behind the youngster (points count double in the rapid). 12/19/2022 – On the second day of the rapid tournament at the Gashimov Memorial, Uzbek grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov kept the lead he had gained by winning all three of his games on Sunday. In the rapid, points count double, so Abdusattorov now has a 10/12 score after six rounds. 12/10/2022 – Tan Zhongyi won the fourth classical game of her semifinal match against Aleksandra Goryachkina on Saturday at the Women’s Candidates Tournament in Khiva. It was also the last game of this competition. 12/4/2022 – At the Women’s Candidates Tournament in Khiva, Tan Zhongyi and her opponent Kateryna Lagno played the tiebreak of their quarterfinal match on Sunday. 12/4/2022 – At the Women's Candidates Tournament in Uzbekistan, the fourth classical games of the quarterfinals both ended in draws on Saturday. 10/31/2022 – An Armageddon game decided the Fischer Random World Championship 2022. In the finals of the World Championship Hikaru Nakamura played against Ian Nepomniachtchi and after a 2-2 tie in the four games of the initial mini-match, an Armageddon game had to decide. Here, Nakamura won with White to become new Fischer Random World Champion. 10/30/2022 – In the semi-finals of the Fischer Random World Championship in Reykjavik Hikaru Nakamura (pictured) came to a clear win against Nodirbek Abdusattorov: Nakamura won 3-0 and will face Ian Nepomniachtchi in the final. Nepomniachtchi lost the first game in his match against Magnus Carlsen but then hit back: He won all of the remaining three games to win the match 3-1. 10/25/2022 – The World Junior Championships in Sardinia ended on Saturday with a double success for players from Azerbaijan. In the Open, the 18th seed IM Abdulla Gadimbayli (photo) finished with 8.0/11 and shared first place with four other players but won the tournament on tiebreak. 10/3/2022 – Each of the ten European mini-states which make up the European Small Nations Association sent one player to this single round-robin tournament with a classical time control. The event took place in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, and ended Saturday. The winner of the tournament was GM Lance Henderson de la Fuente, from Andorra, who obtained an 8/9 score. 9/19/2022 – In the first round of the tournament in the Kazakh capital, players who belong to the same federation had to play each other first. So, on Sunday, Dinara Wagner faced Elisabeth Paehtz in an all-German confrontation, with Paehtz finally grabbing the full point. 7/23/2022 – Jorden van Foreest enters the blitz section of the SuperUnited Grand Chess Tour event in the sole lead, after having collected 12 points in the rapid. Van Foreest lost to Magnus Carlsen on Friday, but managed to defeat Alireza Firouzja, who lost the lead he had after six rounds. 6/25/2022 – In the small Armenian town of Jermuk, a round-robin tournament with a strong field of ten young participants is currently taking place. Among them are Hans Moke Niemann (photo), Nihal Sarin and Alexander Donchenko. After five rounds, these three players are only among the chasers with 2½/5 points each. At the top of the standings is a quartet with 3/5 points each: Armenians Haik Martirosyan, Shant Sargsyan and Samvel Ter-Sahakyan and the Iranian Amin Tabatabaei. 6/4/2022 – Round 4 of the Norway Chess tournament was played on Friday. Magnus Carlsen won his classical against Anish Giri, and was awarded three points for his victory. Previously in the sole lead, Viswanathan Anand, playing with Black, had to settle for a draw against Wesley So before losing the Armageddon game. 5/26/2022 – The first set of the final match at the online Chessable Masters ended on Wednesday with a 2½-1½ victory by Ding Liren over Praggnanandhaa.
