ARTE: Kasparov vs Deep Blue revisited

10/17/2024 – We told you about the six-part dramatic re-enactment of the epic 1997 match between Garry Kasparov and the super-computer Deep Blue. The movie, due for broadcast today, and can also be viewed in full on the ARTE web site or on Youtube. As someone who experienced practically every minute of the drama in real life, back in 1985-86, I could track all the discrepancies. But on the whole the movie was well told and enjoyable.

US Championships: Yoo expelled after violating the code of conduct

10/17/2024 – The fifth round of the US Championships was overshadowed by a serious incident. After Christopher Yoo was defeated by Fabiano Caruana, he lost his nerve: he crumpled up his scoresheet and then stormed out of the tournament hall. In the process, he punched a videographer in the back. The organisers notified the police and Yoo was expelled from the tournament. His previous results were cancelled, including his defeat against Caruana. Nevertheless, Caruana is in the lead with 3 out of 4 points, ahead of Awonder Liang and Hans Niemann with 3 out of 5. WR Masters Cup: Arjun and MVL advance to the finals

10/17/2024 – Arjun Erigaisi and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave secured their places in the final of the WR Chess Masters Cup after winning their semifinal matches on Wednesday. Arjun defeated fellow Indian Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, while MVL triumphed over Alireza Firouzja in an Armageddon tiebreaker. WR Masters Cup: Pragg knocks out Anand in Armageddon

10/16/2024 – The quarterfinals of the WR Chess Masters Cup took place on Tuesday. Arjun Erigaisi and Alireza Firouzja advanced with victories in classical chess, while Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won their matches in the Armageddon tiebreak. Notably, Raunak Sadhwani forfeited his first game against Firouzja. The semifinals will see all-Indian and all-French matchups as the tournament progresses.

10/15/2024 – On Monday the first round of the WR Chess Masters was played in London. It is a 16 player knockout tournament, in which each match consists of two games. In case of a 1-1 tie, Armageddon decides. In the first round the favourites got through, but some only just. 10/14/2024 – Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana are set to compete in an exciting Freestyle Chess match in Singapore, just days before the Classical World Chess Championship between Ding Liren and Dommaraju Gukesh. Organised by Jan-Henric Buettner, the match is part of a broader effort to popularise Freestyle Chess, or chess960, as Buettner’s company prepares for the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam.

Continental Kings clinch Global Chess League for the second consecutive year

10/13/2024 – Triveni Continental Kings defeated PBG Alaskan Knights in both matches of the Finals to defend their Tech Mahindra Global Chess League title. In the first match, Alireza Firouzja and Alexandra Kosteniuk scored the key wins for TCK. Nodirbek Abdusattorov was the sole victor for PBG AK. In the second match, the 'Icon' of PBG AK, Anish Giri, avenged his loss against Firouzja by playing fast, furious and accurate chess. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov was the only other winner for the team.
