Internet star Levy "Gotham Chess" Rozman live in Hamburg

2/6/2025 – Levy Rozman is the world's most successful chess streamer. His YouTube channel Gotham Chess has 5.94 million subscribers, hundreds of thousands of whom regularly watch the 29-year-old New Yorker talking almost every day about current chess events and analysing games. But on 4 February, on his way to the Freestyle Grand Slam in Weissenhaus, Rozman presented himself live to his fans in Hamburg. German GM Jan Gustafsson and IM Georgios "The Big Greek" Souleidis, Germany's most successful streamer, supported Rozman as special guests.

2/6/2025 – The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour is set to begin with its inaugural tournament in Weissenhaus, Germany, from 7 to 14 February. This new five-event series, featuring elite players competing in the Freestyle Chess format (a.k.a. chess960), marks a significant addition to the chess calendar. With a structured format combining rapid and classical games and a $660,000 prize fund, the tour aims to establish itself as a premier competition. Ciudad de Montevideo Open taking place in Uruguay

2/5/2025 – The 8th edition of the "Ciudad de Montevideo Open" is underway at the Montevideo Municipality Conference Center, bringing together players from across South America. With over $5,000 in prizes, the tournament has attracted top players such as Egyptian GM Samy Shoker and Argentine IMs Lucas Coro and Julian Villca. After five rounds, four players share the lead. Meanwhile, the Chess Promotional Tournament offers a platform for amateurs and players rated under 1800.

FIDE Circuit: Ding Liren leads as Tata Steel top finishers join the race

2/5/2025 – Ding Liren remains at the top of the FIDE Circuit 2025 standings, having earned 40.64 points from his world title match against Gukesh Dommaraju. Following the Tata Steel Masters, Praggnanandhaa Ramesbabu has moved into second place, while Gukesh and Nodirbek Abdusattorov follow closely behind. Other players who participated in the Wijk aan Zee event have also entered the leaderboard. With six circuit-eligible tournaments scheduled for February, the standings are expected to evolve in the coming weeks.

Vedant Panesar victorious at Tata Steel Qualifiers

2/4/2025 – Indian FM Vedant Panesar scored an unbeaten 6/9 to win the Tata Steel Chess Qualifiers 2025. This triumph earned him a place in the Challengers section of the 2026 edition. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Leandro Slagboom and FM Tim Grutter, both from the Netherlands, scored 5½/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively. The top three prizes were New in Chess book vouchers worth €90, €60 and €40 each respectively. More than the prize fund, advancing to the Challengers is a big deal for the champion. FIDE ratings - February 2025

2/4/2025 – FIDE published the new world rankings at the beginning of February, but they are no longer completely up-to-date, as the tournament in Wijk aan Zee could not be considered. Carlsen remains number one, but Caruana, who is ranked second in the FIDE world rankings, fell to fourth place in the live ratings list. Hou Yifan remains number one among the women; the best junior is still Gukesh Dommaraju, followed by Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu; and with Divya Deshmukh the best junior among the women also comes from India.

Tata Steel Chess - Pragg takes the title in thrilling tiebreaker

2/2/2025 – Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu won the 2025 Tata Steel Masters after beating world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in a blitz tiebreaker. The two Indian stars entered the final round tied for first place and, notably, both lost their classical games on Sunday. Pragg then won the blitz tiebreaker by a 2-1 score after Gukesh misplayed a knight endgame in the third encounter. Meanwhile, Czech GM Thai Dai Van Nguyen won the Challengers, as he had a better tiebreak score than Aydin Suleymanli, who finished tied for first in the single round-robin. | Replay all the games with computer-assisted analysis.
