3/26/2012 – The Chess Informant is a periodical publication with a survey of topical games, annotated by experts. Now, as the publishers proudly inform us, they have a special section in which former World Champion Garry Kasparov annotates the game he considers most important. It starts in the next issue, and the Director of the Informant tells us we will never guess which game Kasparov chose.

5th World Conference Women and Sport

3/25/2012 – The International Olympic Committee organizes a World Conference on Women and Sport every four years to analyze the progress made within the Olympic Movement and identify ways to improve and increase the participation of women in the world of sport. Participants from more than 130 countries were present, including the Commission for Women’s Chess (WOM) this year. Martha Fierro reports.

Gawain Jones leads with 4.0/4 in Plovdiv

3/24/2012 – On the top twelve boards there were eleven draws in round four of the European Championship in Bulgaria. The one decisive game was the black piece win by Gawain Jones against Russian GM Boris Savchenko,. The English GM is now the only player left with a perfect score. GM Alejandro Ramirez has selected a game that wasn't one of the top top boards, but which he found to be highly entertaining.

Plovdiv European Championship: Revolt of the underrated

3/23/2012 – There were plenty of upsets in the first three rounds in Bulgaria. Typically an IM or even FM rated 250 points below his opponent would take the full point, often with the black pieces. There are now eleven players with 3.0/3 and 41 with 2½ points. The hero of round two was 15-year-old Illya Nyzhnyk, who defeated Dutch Champion Anish Giri, 132 points his senior. It is no surprise that rare footage of all kinds of events and people is appearing, and chess is no exception. While perusing it, we found video of Rubinstein, Capablanca, Botvinnik, and even Karpov's analysis of Fischer-Spassky 1972.

Yuri Sergeyevich Razuvaev, 1945–2012

3/22/2012 – Born on October 10th 1945 Yuri Razuayev was one of the internationally renown players of the 1970s and 80s, a force to be reckoned with at any tournament – but also an enormously respected figure as a coach and an author. After a protracted illness Razuvaev died yesterday at 18:00h Moscow time. We bring you a short review of his career and a eulogy by Boris Gulko.

13th European Championship has started in Plovdiv

3/21/2012 – This event, with 300 players, 15 of whom are rated above 2700, is taking place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from March 20th to 31st, 2012. The zero tolerance rule is in force and draw offers are forbidden before move 40. Professor builds better program to detect cheating in chess

Even the New York Times has picked it up, telling about the work of Kenneth Regan, a computer scientist who is also an International Master. Alina L'Ami hears the Call of the North

3/20/2012 – The Reykjavik Open 2012 took place from March 6–13, and our playing correspondent WGM Alina L'Ami sent us a number of beautiful reports from the Icelandic capital. She was obvious so enthralled by the Nordic country, its people and landscape, that she has written one more massively illustrated report. Gaziantep: Gunina overtakes Pähtz, wins European Women's Blitz

3/19/2012 – She already won the title in the classical time controls, now Russian IM Valentina Gunina added the Blitz title to it. In the final round she was able to defeat former women's world champion Antoaneta Stefanov 2-0 and overtake the leading Elisabeth Pähtz. The German IM will remain in Turkey, since she has signed a contract to train young talents. Big pictorial report.

New ACP emerges with lofty goals and new events

3/17/2012 – The Association of Chess Professionals was founded in 2003 to protect chess professionals’ rights and promote their activities worldwide. After an optimistic start the ACP slowly seemed to run out of steam and display a lack of motivation or new ideas. That is set to change now, with a new board, initiatives and events – like an exciting new Women's World Championships in Rapid and Blitz.
