2/7/2020 – For 38 years, JUAN SEBASTIAN MORGADO was the manager of a chess shop in Argentina. A collector of national and international magazines, he compiled as much info as he could get his hands on regarding the 1939 Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires. Now he has published his findings in "El impresionante Torneo de Ajedrez de las Naciones de 1939", a detailed account divided in three volumes. He sent us a synopsis.

Youth Team Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece

2/6/2020 – The European Chess Union (ECU) invites all National Chess Federations of ECU to participate in the European Youth Team Championships 2020, organised from July 9th (arrivals) to 17th (departures). It takes place in the incredibly beautiful Greek sea-side hotel Lazart. It is a seven-round Swiss, with two open sections and two sections for the girls teams. Start of the second Cairns Cup

2/6/2020 – Starting Friday, most of the world's best female players will play the 2nd Cairns Cup in Saint Louis. The field is led by World Champion Ju Wenjun. The tournament winner will receive USD $45,000 from the total prize fund of $180,000. Rounds begin daily at 19:00 UTC (20:00 CET / 14:00 EST) and the games will be broadcast live with commentary.

Hort stories: Remembering Tony Miles

2/5/2020 – Tony Miles was the first English Grandmaster and in the 1980s one of the best players from the West. In 1980, at a tournament in Skara, he tried 1.e4 a6!? against Anatoly Karpov and defeated the World Champion in a famous game. Senior Championships to be held in Prague

Leonard Barden's Evening Standard column ends after 63 years

Kramnik and Gelfand train super-talents

February FIDE ratings

2/1/2020 – Fabiano Caruana did phenomenally at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee and was able to reduce his Elo distance to World Champion Magnus Carlsen from 50 to 20 points — Carlsen now stands at 2862 and Caruana at 2842. Ju Wenjun remained Women's World Champion, and world number two. Dortmund returns to its roots in July

2/1/2020 – The annual chess festival in Dortmund is evolving. The Sparkassen Chess Meeting is now the Sparkassen Chess Trophy, and moves to a classic venue, the Westfalenhallen (Dortmund is a major city in the region of North Rhine-Westphalia). The first details of the 2020 events is now out, which will be supported by Vladimir Kramnik and organised by his former manager Carsten Hensel.

2/1/2020 – Two strong tournaments that are about to celebrate their second editions will take place in February — the Cairns Cup in Saint Louis, an elite-level tournament for top female players, and the Prague Festival, modelled after the Tata Steel Chess Masters and Challengers.
