Hans Niemann dominates Capablanca Memorial

4/30/2022 – The 55th edition of the Capablanca Memorial took place on April 19-28 at the historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana. Hans Niemann from the United States dominated the Elite group, scoring 7½ points in the 10-player single round-robin. Duda wins Oslo Esports Cup, Le grabs second place

4/29/2022 – In a surprising development, Jan-Krzysztof Duda leapfrogged Praggnanandhaa and Magnus Carlsen in the final round of the Oslo Esports Cup. The Polish star won the tournament after beating an off-form Eric Hansen and seeing both Carlsen and Pragg quickly losing their matches against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Anish Giri. Le Quang Liem, who was tied in points with Duda before the final round, beat Jorden van Foreest in tiebreaks to get sole second place.

4/28/2022 – The finals of the American Cup kicked off with the first of two classical games in the matches between Aronian - Caruana and Krush - Lee. In the Open, Aronian (pictured) managed to build up a winning endgame advantage but faltered at the last moment, allowing Caruana to escape with a draw. London 1883: Prelude to the First World Championship Match (April 26, 1883 - June 23, 1883)

4/27/2022 – London, with its rich chess tradition, has been the scene of many great tournaments. One of these, the London International Tournament of 1883, happened at an important point in history. It is remembered mainly as the event that led to the first World Chess Championship, which, in turn, formalized the title of World Champion. Johannes Zukertort (pictured) won the tournament ahead of Wilhelm Steinitz, and in 1886, three years after London, they played the first official World Championship match against each other.
