9/7/2022 – In his “Game of the Week” show #532 Merijn van Delft looks at the controversial game between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann at the Sinquefield Cup 2022. Carlsen lost with White and then withdrew from the tournament. The tweet, with which Carlsen announced his withdrawal caused a fervent and on-going debate whether Niemann cheated when he won against Carlsen. 9/7/2022 – In the Ragozin Variation of the Queen's Gambit (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 Bb4) Black takes an active path with 4…Bb4. In his theory article in the current ChessBase magazine, Roven Vogel examines the continuation 5.Qa4+ Nc6 6.e3, which has already been tested many times by Vincent Keymer. 9/6/2022 – On the last weekend of August, the 31. "Ukrainian Independence Cup" was organised in Kiev to time to celebrate Ukrainian independence. Almost a 100 players took part in the event which featured a rapid (15'+10") and a blitz (3'+2" ) tournament. IM Valeriy Grinev won both tournaments. 9/6/2022 – For the first time in his career, world champion Magnus Carlsen has withdrawn from a professional tournament. Before the start of the Sinquefield Cup’s fourth round, the Norwegian shared his decision on Twitter, adding a short clip in which football coach José Mourinho says, “If I speak I’m in big trouble”. Since the withdrawal came before the halfway point, Carlsen’s results will not be considered. As for the chess, round 4 saw Fabiano Caruana beating Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, while Wesley So is now the sole leader with 2½/4 points. | Photo: Crystal Fuller
