The "Special" of CBM #208: The FIDE World Championship 25 years ago

7/10/2022 – At the end of 1997, the first FIDE World Knockout Championship took place in Groningen. Vishy Anand won the final against Michael Adams. Strictly speaking, however, it was not a World Championship, but only a preliminary stage, because the winner had to play the defending champion Anatoli Karpov in a final in Lausanne directly after the tournament. Creating studies from games (1)

7/10/2022 – "Surprisingly often I watch sequences of moves in games that do not remind me of anything from my previous chess memory," writes endgame study composer Steffen Slumstrup Nielsen. In such cases, he will rush over to his chessboard and start thinking about turning it into a study. One way to do this is to strip the position and present the main idea as economically as possible. Slumstrup Nielsen's description of the process appeared in The Macedonian Problemist.

Fighting the Tromp

7/8/2022 – Those of us who love to play an Indian Opening (or Benoni or the Benkö Gambit) against 1.d4 usually do not feel comfortable when 2.Bg5 shows up on the board. But if your opponent is already taking away "your" opening, then follow Petra Papp's recommendation from CBM #208 and ensure with 2...c5!? that White doesn't get a "normal" Trompowsky either! In addition, the position immediately gets dynamic, White's centre is attacked. and the diagonal for the queen on d8 is open. In the first part of her analysis, our author examines White's responses 3.e3, 3.dxc5, 3.Nc3 and 3.Bxf6. Take a look!

Chess Olympiad in Chennai: The USA is favourite, China and Russia do not take part

7/8/2022 – From 28 July to 10 August the Chess Olympiad will be played in Chennai, India. 188 teams start in the Open, 162 in the Women's Olympiad, that's a new record of participants. However, two of the strongest federations will not come to Chennai. The Russian federation was excluded because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the Chinese federation decided not to participate, as protection against the pandemic. Thus, the USA is clear favourite in the Open while India is favourite to win the Women's Olympiad. | Photo: FIDE

7/7/2022 – At the Interzonal Tournament in Portoroz 1958, the then 15-year-old Bobby Fischer (pictured) finished in 6th place with 12.0/20, and narrowly qualified for the Candidates Tournament. Half a point behind, five players shared places seven to eleven with 11.5/20 each, which was not enough to qualify. One of these five players was David Bronstein, who failed to win a better endgame against Fischer in Round 6. Karsten Müller and Zoran Petronijevic took a closer look at this endgame and invite ChessBase readers to search for a win for Bronstein. | Photo: Tournament book

In this follow-up part, I would like to show you how important and practical this distinction actually is. When defending, you should keep all four modes in mind and be flexible in choosing the most suitable. | Photo: Garry Kasparov | Photo: Lennart Ootes
