I’m looking at a trendy exchange sacrifice in the Schmid Benoni that was featured in two games played at the SuperBet tournament in Warsaw. When Rapport and Duda employ it, you should sit up and take notes.

This is a strategically rich position that requires keen judgement. Have a go at the questions I am posing to see if your feel for the position is correct.

Right in the opening, White faces a dilemma: 12.e4 or 12.0-0...? This makes a profound difference to future play.

In the next position, Black is faced with big strategic decisions. Which is correct?

  1. 18...Bxc3 19 bxc3 Ne5
  2. 18...f5
  3. 18...Ne5

It is very difficult to determine the correct continuation.

And here’s another two-mover.

No that is the Old Benoni (usually starting 1 d4 c5) I think.

A rather lame two-mover. All the mates are already there if it were black to move, except for 1... Qxf3 - now what could be the solution? Moving which white piece wouldn't spoil anything? At the end of the 19th century, they were capable to make much better problems.

I thought the Schmidt Benoni was when White played Nc3 without c4...
