Maybe the chess fans from the Jardin du Luxembourg will come to "La Maison de la Chimie" to watch Carlsen & Co. play, maybe they prefer to do what they do throughout the year. Entertaining start of the Cez Chess Trophy 2016

6/7/2016 – Before David Navara and Richard Rapport started their four-game match at the Michna Palace in Prague they played a blindfold game of living chess which was won by Rapport. However, in the first two games of the match the Hungarian grandmaster had to content himself with a draw. Meanwhile Timur Gareyev provided more blindfold-entertainment.

Close final at the European Women's Championship

6/7/2016 – The European Women's Championship in Mamaia, Romania, will be decided in the eleventh and final round. Anna Ushenina, who is sole leader with 8.0/10, has to play against Lilit Mkrtchian who trails with 7.5/10. Elisabeth Pähtz and Sabrina Vega can also hope for the title if things go their way. They both have 7.5/10 and play against each other in the final round.

Sethuruman and Kulkarni win Asian Continental

6/6/2016 – The Asian Continental held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan ended with no small amount of surprises and drama. The men's event saw the two sole leaders Le Quang Liem and Wei Yi both lose with white in the final round, missing gold as a result. Indian GM Sethuruman beat Wei Yi and took first. In the women's event, WGM Bhakti Kulkarni took sole first with 7.0/9. Illustrated report with analysis.

Viktor Korchnoi dies at 85

6/6/2016 – He was one of the truly great chess players, a legend. He played in three matches that produced the World Champion, but in each case lost to Anatoly Karpov. It made him the strongest player never to have won the title. In 1976 he defected from the Soviet Union and took up residence in Switzerland, where he continued to be active into his eighties in spite of a stroke. Now he has gone and leaves a grieving chess community.

Philidor's "L'Analyze des Echecs"

6/6/2016 – When Tom Ewers analysed the endgame K+R+B against K+R he came across André Danican Philidor's book "L'Analyze des Echecs", in which Philidor had analysed this endgame more than 250 years ago with remarkable precision. From the analysis of the endgame Ewers soon moved to the book itself and wondered how the content changed with new editions and translations. Here are his findings.

6/4/2016 – In an astonishing round that had to have Gashimov smiling, the final round saw three of his compatriots winning their final games. However, the biggest result was of course Mamedyarov who defeated Giri in a superb rook endgame he played to perfection, right after beating Caruana in the previous round. In a nail-biting playoff, he defeated Caruana and snatched the title. Final report.

Muhammad Ali – indeed the greatest

6/4/2016 – "I used to tell people that in my youth I had three great sporting heroes: Muhammad Ali, Bobby Fischer and Franz Beckenbauer. Nobody else came close to them. A Dutch colleague had the same heroes, with Cruyff replacing Beckenbauer. Fischer died in January 2008, at the age of 64, Cruyff a few months ago at the age of 69, and now Dirk Jan and I both mourn the greatest boxer of all time." Eulogy by Frederic Friedel.

Shamkir Rd8: Three-way fight for first

6/3/2016 – It was a dramatic penultimate round in which leader Caruana hit an oil slick and lost to Mamedyarov. Things might have gone worse for him had rival Anish Giri managed to win his game against Hou Yifan a piece up, but in the end he failed to convert. Caruana, Giri, and Mamedyarov can all win now, since first place is decided by a playoff in the event of a draw. Round eight report.

Zalakaros Open: Three players lead

6/3/2016 – After seven from nine rounds three players lead the strong open tournament in Zalakaros, Hungary: GM I. Ivanisevic, GM A. Rakhmanov and GM L. Vajda. French Top 12: Bischwiller and Clichy lead

Scholastic chess in Russia

6/2/2016 – The White Rook tournament in Russia has a long tradition. Established in 1969 it aims to attract young players to chess and now is the oldest scholastic sports competition in Russia. In 2016 more than 6,500 pupils younger than 14 took part in the qualifying events that were played all over Russia. Now the finals began in Dagomys. European Women's Championship: Stefanova takes lead

6/2/2016 – The European Women's Championship 2016 is played from 27th May to 7th June in the Mamaia resort in Romania. After six of eleven rounds top seed Antonatea Stefanova from Bulgaria leads with 5.0/6. In round six Stefanova scored a crucial win against Yuliya Shvayger, sole leader after five rounds. Half a point behind Stefanova follow twelve players with 4.5/6 each.

Shamkir Rd7: Caruana lets Giri escape

6/2/2016 – It was a tough round with a strange twist. Among the decisive results was Mamedyarov's strong win over Safarli, while Eljanov defeated Hou in a long battle up a piece but with technical issues. The game of the round was between the leaders Caruana and Giri, and, just when Fabiano had reached a won position, he needed to find a brilliant coup de grace! Alas! Still, the tournament is not over.

6/1/2016 – It seems that the rest day fueled the fire for some interesting games, but somehow or another none of them finished in decisive results. Caruana was by the far the one with the best winning chances, as he had Safarli against the ropes right from the opening. Yifan also had an edge against Harikrishna but let him go. At the end of the day, we saw five draws.

Gareyev gives blindfold simul in Amsterdam

5/31/2016 – The Caissa Amsterdam chess club, the largest chess club in Amsterdam, just celebrated its 65th anniversary. In honor of the moment they organized a series of activities for both the youth as well as the adults in the club. One of thesewas a blindfold simul by Timur Gareyev on thirteen boards. Lennart Ootes was there and brought some excellent photos.

June 2016 ratings: Kramnik no.2; Inarkiev gains 43 Elo

5/31/2016 – While one must take one's hat off to Vladimir Kramnik, back to 2812 and world no. 2, the most amazing result of the month was by Ernesto Inarkiev who racked up 43 Elo after a near 2900 performance over 17 games, including a smashing 9.0/11 win of the European Championship. A special note also of 15-year-old Polina Shuvalova, who had a breakthrough this year.
