London Chess Classic, Rd. 6: Simply Fantastic

12/15/2016 – In a round with a lot of exciting chess Fabiano Caruana played the most brilliant game by defeating Hikaru Nakamura with a positional queen sacrifice. Wesley So crushed Veselin Topalov with a violent kingside attack and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave countered Levon Aronian's optimistic winning attempts. Anish Giri chased Vishy Anand's king across the board but had to content himself with a draw. Vladimir Kramnik and Michael Adams played a relatively sober draw. Report and games.

London Chess Classic, Rd. 5: A fine win and an amazing draw

12/13/2016 – Round 5 of the London Chess Classic brought four draws and one win. The only winner of the round was Michael Adams who defeated Veselin Topalov with an inspired attack - Nadezhda Kosintseva annotates the encounter. The other games ended in a draw but were very exciting. Vishy Anand came up with a novelty, Caruana missed good chances and Vladimir Kramnik showed amazing defensive skills.

A narrow escape: Seirawan on Carlsen vs Karjakin (3/3)

12/13/2016 – Magnus Carlsen won the World Championship match against Sergey Karjakin by winning the tie-break convincingly 3-1. The last move of the match was a stunning queen sacrifice. Carlsen retained his title and it is easy to forget how close Karjakin was to becoming new World Champion. Yasser Seirawan takes a look at the second part of the match and all its drama.

London Chess Classic, Rd. 4: Nakamura turns up the heat

12/12/2016 – In round four of the London Chess Classic Hikaru Nakamura scored his second win in a row. He won a wild and inspired game with Black against Veselin Topalov. Wesley So was close to a win against Anish Giri but the dutch player defended stubbornly and saved the draw - Georg Meier shares his impressions about this encounter. The other three games also ended in a draw, but they were also entertaining. See our report.

Modern chess in an ancient city

12/12/2016 – Tiberias is an ancient city with a rich history. Founded by the Romans it is mentioned in the New Testament and considered to be one of the four holy Cities of Judaism. Currently, chess is also an attraction of Tiberias. The city is host to the Championships of Israel and used the opportunity to show how much it supports chess.

Birthdays are unlucky

12/12/2016 – We all witnessed Nakamura’s painful defeat against Wesley So in round 1, which meant that he Hikaru’s birthday did not go the way he intended. However the American defended skillfully and kept his lead in the tournament as well as in the overall standing of the Grand Chess Tour - GM Michail Krasenkow annotates the game - his closest rival Hikura Nakamura scored against Vishy Anand though, the race is still open.
