Averbakh on Averbakh (2): Grandmaster and World Championship candidate

5/15/2022 – Yuri Averbakh is no more. Tributes are pouring in from all over the world to the late grandmaster, who had only recently turned 100 and chess fans had celebrated the day. Not many are aware that he wrote his autobiography years before. Our columnist had begun a series on this fascinating work and narrated how it all began. Then came the Ukraine war, and he could not bring himself to write anything in the face of this tragedy. Sadly, the war is continuing, and our columnist has reconciled himself to writing. Importantly, this series is a homage to the life and work of a great player. | Photo: Eric Koch / Anefo

Professor Barry Hymer reviews “The Human Factor in Chess”

5/13/2022 – A sceptic regarding the value of ‘learning styles’ approaches, Professor Barry Hymer feared that “The Human Factor in Chess”, a book written by GMs Karsten Müller and Luis Engel, would fall short of expectations. As he states in his review, though, the book “recognises the dynamic evolution of many players’ styles and, for the most part, it avoids assertions that are overly deterministic and mystical”. Moreover, Hymer asserts that the book is both instructive and a pleasurable read.

Trent's Tactics - Was Botvinnik strong tactically?

5/13/2022 – The sixth World Chess Champion was certainly not known for his cunning tactical manoeuvres. He actually confessed that he was relatively weak with tactics. All in one game!

One explores the pawn advance 3.h4 against Black's Fianchetto in the Gruenfeld and King's Indian; the other delves into a London System setup against the King's Indian. Take a look!

Svitlana's Smart Moves - The King's Indian

5/12/2022 – The King's Indian is a very straight-forward, aggressive opening. Basically, Black builds up a system in the first couple of moves, and once it is set up, the attacking begins! White tries to counter on the queenside, in most cases. But please take a look at it all for yourself in this episode of "Svitlana's Smart Moves".

Candidates to be decided in playoffs in case of a tie for first place

5/11/2022 – Much has been discussed regarding the tiebreak system used in previous editions of the Candidates Tournament. Given the controversy, FIDE decided to reconsider the regulations before this year’s edition. After consulting the participants, the rules have been updated — in case of a tie for first, a rapid (and blitz, if necessary) playoff will decide who wins the tournament. | Photo: Lennart Ootes (2020)

A very special Najdorf

5/10/2022 – When White wants to tackle the Sicilian Najdorf Variation — 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 — very directly, 6.Bg5 is a popular choice. After 6...e6 7.f4 the rare 7...b5, the Polugaevsky Variation, leads to sharp and difficult positions. Petra Papp brings the theory of this variation up to date in her article for ChessBase Magazine #207, explaining typical strategies and motifs for both sides.

Karjakin’s prank call

5/10/2022 – Sergey Karjakin was born in 1990 in Simferopol, the second-largest city in Crimea – Ukrainian territory that was annexed by Russia in 2014. At 12 he became (at the time) the youngest grandmaster in history. In the past months, Karjakin publicly supported the Russian assault on Ukraine, for which he was banned for six months from all FIDE chess competitions. Now he has sought revenge with a deep-fake call to FIDE Director General GM Emil Sutovsky. The British Chess Magazine reports.

5/10/2022 – On first sight, things look grim for White in the diagrammed position as it is hard to see what he can do against the advance of Black's f-pawn. However, White remembered the rule that pawn endings should be calculated carefully and found a way to get a draw. What did he do?
