January 2019 FIDE Ratings

by Macauley Peterson
1/1/2019 – FIDE's January ratings are out and saw a few big moves in the top 100 rapid and blitz lists thanks to the recently completed World Rapid and Blitz Championships. Carlsen's blitz dominance was on display and he solidified the top rating spot, now at 2954. Daniil Dubov gained notoriety (and rating) for his impressive run in the World Rapid Championship. Among the women, Ju Wenjun took her third world title of the year, but Kateryna Lagno, who lost the World Championship final in a blitz tiebreaker against Ju, managed to win the Blitz Championship well ahead of her rival. | Pictured: Women's World Blitz Champion, Kateryna Lagno | Photo: Lennart Ootes

Blitz and Rapid take centre stage

We start 2019 with the rapid and blitz ratings for a change, following the 15 rounds of rapid and 21 rounds of blitz in St. Petersburg at the World Championship for the two disciplines.

Top 100 Rapid

In rapid, there was no change to the top three, although the gap between Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura has narrowed thanks to the former's shedding 34 points — that despite finishing a decent 5th place. Missing was Leinier Dominguez, who has taken up residence in — and switched federations to — the USA.

Daniil Dubov, the new World Rapid Champion, jumped from number 40 to number 12 and now posts a 2779 rating. It's worth keeping an eye on him in the coming months.

Silver medal went to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who increased his rating by 24 points to 2810 and takes over the fourth position in the world rankings. Nakamura, with the Bronze saw his rating barely budge.

Top 100 Blitz

Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his World Blitz Champion title, and remarkably extended his rating further into the stratosphere, gaining 15 points to reach an astounding 2954.

Jan-Krzysztof Duda gets a special mention for his clear second place finish with 16½, a score which would have won or shared first in each of the past three Blitz World Championships but left him a half point behind Carlsen's magnificent 17 point tally. He rocketed from number 47 to number 7 in the world rankings, and now is one of eight players over 2800 in blitz.

Alexander Grischuk and Viswanathan Anand dropped 11 and 13 places after finishing a disappointing 22nd and 46th respectively in St. Petersburg. Alireza Firouzja climbed to number 25 in the world in blitz and is the youngest member of the Top 100.

Top 100 players

One year ago, World Champion Magnus Carlsen's Elo rating stood at 2834. Exactly a year and 76 classical games later, he's still World Number 1, and has gained a lone point to 2835. We start the year with four players rated over 2800, the three who had surpassed the mark a year ago, plus Ding Liren, who did not play in December but made a big impact in 2018 not only with his rating, but also his 100 classical game undefeated streak.

Top 100 Women

There were no major changes to the Women's top 100 list, however, what is notable is that the World Championship cycle now has a definite date for the start of a Candidates Tournament to determine the challenger to Ju Wenjun — May 29th — as announced by FIDE President Dvorkovich on Twitter:

Many of the world's best women were, of course, playing blitz and rapid in St. Petersburg as well, and one of the most impressive was Iranian Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, who snared the silver medal in both competitions, far exceeding her world ranking.

"Another statistical oddity is that 10 of the top 100 women are born 2000 or later but only 2 of the top 100 men. This is compensated by a smaller number of women born in 1990s. Does this mean that more women drop out of chess in their 20s ?" CH

Possibly. Interesting observation that begs for questions.

Or maybe there was a boom in chess which affected more females born in 2000 and more.

I am too lazy and/or not eagerly curious enough to do this, but it would be interesting to see if in the past, the same phenomenon (important representation of 18 years-old or less among higher-rated) also existed.

Thanks Mr. Holmes. I knew about Judit P's refusal to participate in women-only event but, for some reason, I thought it was also the case of Hou Yifan. But it is not, or at least was not the case in that 2016 interview - Hou Yifan did contest the knock-out system for the Women's championship, which is why she did not participate to it - but said that if the formula would be changed enough, she would still participate for the time time being (of that 2016 interview). Here for the interview: https://en.chessbase.com/post/why-hou-yifan-has-dropped-out-of-the-cycle

Thanks for the clarification Mr. Holmes.

If the aim is to remove the label of women players then why have a woman's list at all ? But to have 1 women's list (for classical) but 3 lists for men at different time controls is neither one thing nor the other. & why not remove women's titles too ? If there were no women's teams, it would certainly reduce the cost of hosting the Olympiad.

@Raymond Labelle Refusal to participate in Women's Events - that was Judith Polgar not Hou Yifan. What Hou objected to was that she got a ridiculously high number of pairings with women at Gibraltar in comparison to the proportion of women participating.

Comparing the Girls & Junior lists reveals that going just by birth year, the Girls are on average about 6 months younger than the Juniors. Anyone have any idea why that might be ? Another statistical oddity is that 10 of the top 100 women are born 2000 or later but only 2 of the top 100 men. This is compensated by a smaller number of women born in 1990s. Does this mean that more women drop out of chess in their 20s ?

In a nutshell, Mcauley presented well the women-special event dilemma: "It's useful so long as there separate events for women based on rating qualification and there remain few-to-no women on the overall top 100 (Hou is currently #86)."

If the first woman is #86 (and the second far from being even 100th), special women events could be helpful to encourage chess among women, in waiting of the time there is enough arriving in the big leagues.

Thanks again Macauley. Well, I missed it - not blaming your coverage - thanks for the second chance.

@Raymond Labelle - The best way to keep up with news on any player is via their tag page. E.g.:
https://en.chessbase.com/tagged?tag=Hou%20Yifan

Any significant news related to a player will show up there. We did mention Hou's activity prominently in the December ratings update since that's where the German Bundesliga games appeared: https://en.chessbase.com/post/fide-ratings-2018-12

Thanks for the news Macauley. It had been a time we have heard of Hou Yifan (not everyone in the world follows the German League activities - and you also gave more general news about her).

Ms. Lagno lost the Women classical championship on a tie-break of Blitz. But she convincingly had a better Blitz result in a long Blitz tournament held shortly after than the person against who she lost the blitz tie-break in the Women classical championship.

Perplexity.

I have a vague memory, that I did not re-verify, that Hou Yifan refuses to participate to women-only events.

For the women championship, she criticised the knock-out formula. I think she is right - this formula does not really permit to identify the best player. FIDE's new president announced a change in the formula which is more like the overall championship. Could that convince Hou Yifan to participate to the Women's championships again? Or would she still refuse, given that it is a women-only event?

That is a question that I hope a journalist will ask her.

@macauley

Glad to learn of Your position as regards women-only rating lists. I would go even further, i.e. to abolish women-only events, except perhaps their world and national championships: the best way to improve is to play against the strongest possible opposition, so they should be stimulated to play open events on as large a scale as possible, maybe by attracting them with more special prices, like it is common practice in the Gibraltar Open.
macauley macauley 1/2/2019 11:11
@benavas3 - She's still number 1 among women after playing a couple of games in the German League and will, therefore, remain "active" for the next 11 months even if she plays no more games. I expect she will, however — possibly even the Candidates tournament, but she is currently a full-time student at Oxford University.

@Chris Holmes - I think the goal should rather be to do away with the Women-only list rather than add more of them. It's useful so long as there separate events for women based on rating qualification and there remain few-to-no women on the overall top 100 (Hou is currently #86).
benavas3 benavas3 1/2/2019 09:55
What happened to Hou Yifan?
Chris Holmes Chris Holmes 1/2/2019 08:52
Strange there are no blitz or rapid ratings for women.
Inequality rumbles on.
