1/15/2019 – Courtesy our friends At New in Chess: GM MATTHEW SADLER on books looks at two of Simon Williams' recent video series. Plus, what would AlphaZero think about the World Championship match that was held at a stone’s throw from DeepMind’s headquarters in London? Sadler and NATASHA REGAN, authors of Game Changer: AlphaZero’s Groundbreaking Chess Strategies and the Promise of AI, provide a glimpse.
11/21/2018 – Two years ago, in New York, Magnus Carlsen defended his title by winning the rapid tiebreaker. Traditionalists will shudder at the thought of blitz games deciding the world championship match in London. GM MAXIM DLUGY looks at the players’ chances if that scenario becomes reality and has suggestions for how Fabiano Caruana, despite a whopping rating gap of 172(!) points, might beat the odds.
7/4/2018 – In the latest magazine issue #4 from New In Chess, you can find an in-depth story on the U.S. Championship by GM Alejandro Ramirez: "The tallest king In St. Louis". Sam Shankland's win kicked off a remarkable streak — in a matter of two months, he jumped from 2671 to 2727. He gained 59 Elo points in a span of just 60 days and raced to the rank of world number 27, jumping from being a strong grandmaster to a super elite player. 4/12/2018 – The popular S.O.S. column from New In Chess Magazine, recently featured an almost comical second move for black against the English early fianchetto: 2...h5. NIC columnist Jeroen Bosch notes, ‘A move like 2...h5 gives rise to a lot of early creativity, of course.’ See what he means in this entertaining article from the leading global English chess magazine.
2/16/2018 – Courtesy of our friends at New in Chess: The eternal question remains: how do I get myself in good shape before a tournament? Matthew Sadler reviews books and DVDs that may help you to be in the right disposition.
7/5/2017 – In the recent issue of New in Chess magazine GM Matthew Sadler, having switched jobs and looking for a low-effort way to keep his feeling for chess alive, watched some ChessBase DVDs on positional themes. He started with Sergei Tiviakov and progressed to Adrian Mikhalchishin, whom he calls "an entertaining and lively host ... who kept me thoroughly entertained all through the many hours of content. He does however make tactical mistakes, caused by the author's unbridled enthusiasm. Still: definitely a series worth consideration.
6/23/2017 – Being swamped with work in a new job and looking for a low-effort way to
keep his feeling for chess alive, GM Matthew Sadler watched DVDs on positional
themes. He started with Sergei Tiviakov’s The Art of Defence and
The Art of the Positional Exchange Sacrifice. He calls the first
"masterly – a good DVD, with a slightly weaker start and a very
strong finish! Recommended!" The second is "another fantastic
effort from Sergei – I think we’ll stretch this one to five
stars!
10/7/2016 – Thanks to his rise to the very top in the chess world French GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave made it to the cover of the new issue of "New in Chess". But inside the current issue, in the regular "Just Checking" column is an interesting interview with Jonathan Speelman, grandmaster, mathematician, former World Championship candidate and popular ChessBase author.
6/23/2016 – The current issue of the Dutch chess magazine honors Garry Kasparov's impressive performance in the St. Louis Blitz Challenge and has a frank interview with Magnus Carlsen about his success at the Norway Chess tournament. Nigel Short ponders about pleasant ways to improve one's chess performance while Judit Polgar praises the pawns. And much more...
5/4/2016 – Each new issue of "New in Chess" is a little event. The latest edition features Sergey Karjakin on its cover and offers a wealth of interesting articles: Mihail Marin, for example, enthuses about Alekhine's computer moves while Nigel Short tells about a remarkable record he holds. And Matthew Sadler has only good things to say about Sergey Tiviakov's latest DVD.
10/12/2015 – The subject of Mihail Marin's DVD is playing with stable pieces, usually a knight, placed on well-protected squares – a theme he associates with the Soviet Chess School. NIC reviewer GM Matthew Sadler found the product a slightly mixed experience (he was struck by an error in a subvariation), "though the best stuff is really very good!" In the end he awards it four out of five stars.
10/8/2015 – He spent a month "relaxing with a bottle of wine and some chess DVDs". GM Matthew Sadler reviewed them for the magazine New In Chess. Of Rustam Kasimdzhanov on the Nimzo-Indian with 4.Qc2 he says: "I do like his DVDs a lot ... excellent insights!" And on Alejandro Ramirez' Ragozin: "He does a super job of structuring the material and delivers it with enthusiasm and clarity." NiC reviews.
4/22/2015 – Yesterday we reported on the extraordinary news storm that had broken out over an article, by Nigel Short, that appeared in the magazine New in Chess. Going through the follow-up stories and readers' reactions it became clear that many had not read the original article. So we asked the NIC publishers for permission to reproduce it in full. Now you can judge for yourself.
