Vachier-Lagrave beats Firouzja in Armageddon, bags CrunchLabs Masters

7/25/2024 – Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the third event in this year's Champions Chess Tour, the CrunchLabs Masters, after beating Alireza Firouzja in the Armageddon decider of the Division I Grand Final. MVL thus secured a spot in the tour's Finals, set to take place over-the-board at the end of the year. The deciding match saw the contenders playing a number of technical battles, with four games ending in draws to set up a sudden-death tiebreaker.

New Guinness Chess World Record

7/24/2024 – On July 20, 2024, for the 100th anniversary of its founding, FIDE planned a monumental event. It is a quest to set the Guinness World Record for the most chess games played in 24 hours, asking players all over the world to help achieve this goal. They are asked to play at least one 5-min game on one of the platforms or applications joining the World Records Attempt, between July 20, 2024 00:00:00 CEST and July 21, 2024 00:00:00 CEST. CrunchLabs Masters: Grischuk and Arjun prevail in Divisions II and III

7/24/2024 – Two very different Grand Finals were seen in Division II and Division III of the CrunchLab Masters. While Alexander Grischuk needed two matches (seven games in total, including an Armageddon) to take down Vidit Gujrathi in Division II, Arjun Erigaisi quickly defeated Evgeny Alekseev by a 2½-½ score in Division III. The Division I Grand Final between Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave will take place on Wednesday.

Biel: Dominating Salem wins Challengers Triathlon

7/24/2024 – Saleh Salem secured tournament victory at the Challengers Triathlon in Biel after beating Vaishali Rameshbabu with the white pieces on Tuesday. The Emirati GM was declared the winner thanks to his whopping 11-point lead over Alexander Donchenko. In Biel's flagship event, the Masters Triathlon, on the other hand, there were no winners at the start of the final phase. CrunchLabs Masters: Firouzja beats Nepo to reach Grand Final

7/23/2024 – Alireza Firouzja advanced to the Division I Grand Final in the online CrunchLab Masters by beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the losers' bracket final. Biel: Pragg delivers in the blitz to stay in the race

7/22/2024 – The blitz section of the GM Triathlons at the Biel Chess Festival decided which players would qualify for the final phase and thus fight for the 2024 title. There was particular tension in the Masters, where the Indian superstar Praggnanandhaa had to work hard to make it through, as he had a strong showing to qualify in third place after all. US Seniors and Juniors: Akopian, Yoo and Su sole leaders

7/21/2024 – With 5 out of 9 rounds played at the US Senior, US Junior and US Girls Championships, the three concurrent events have sole leaders atop the standings. In the Senior tournament, Vladimir Akopian leads with 4½ points, as only Gregory Kaidanov managed to hold him to a draw in the first 5 rounds of play.
