Two Knights Talk: Who will win in Prague?

2/26/2025 – On Wednesday 26th February at 15:00 the first round of the Masters will start at the Prague Chess Festival. The tournament has a strong field, the festival is an event. Reason enough for Johannes Fischer and Arne Kähler to take a look at the tournament in their new episode of 'Two Knights Talk' - they introduce the participants and wonder who will win. They also come up with a tactical task from last year's festival and offer a quiz to test your chess and language skills.

Assault on the Carlsen record?

2/26/2025 – The highest in chess history was achieved by Magnus Carlsen. It was Elo 2882, recorded in May 2014, breaking the record that had previously been set by Soviet and Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov. D Gukesh thinks it is possible to surpass this peak, but that it will be “very challenging” for him or any other player to achieve the feat in the near future. A global TV show for chess

2/26/2025 – World Chess PLC, a global chess company and the operator of ChessArena.com, has announced the launch of The World Chess Show, a dedicated global TV program now airing in 156 markets across 53 networks. The show is the first of its kind – a major sports media property bringing chess to mainstream audiences beyond the chess community. 2/26/2025 – The seventh round featured dramatic events at the Women's Grand Prix in Monaco. Tan Zhongyi and Kateryna Lagno played an exciting and long game with a total of six queens appearing on the board. The game between Humpy Koneru and Sarasadat Khademalsharieh ended curiously. Monaco GP: Tan and Goryachkina grab full points

2/25/2025 – Round six of the Monaco Women's Grand Prix saw two decisive games, as Aleksandra Goryachkina and Tan Zhongyi (pictured) claimed victories to shake up the standings. Sole leader Kateryna Lagno held a quick draw to maintain her lead, while Humpy Koneru and Sara Khadem suffered defeats. Goryachkina's endgame technique allowed her to overcome Humpy, while Khadem faltered in a difficult defensive position against Tan. Prague Chess Festival 2025 - An interview with Thai Dai Van Nguyen

2/24/2025 – The 7th Prague Chess Festival kicks off on Tuesday 25 February. Among the players is Czech grandmaster Thai Dai Van Nguyen, who won the Challengers Tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January. He is ranked ninth in the Masters, but last year he finished just half a point behind the winner, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, in joint second to fourth place. Grivas on Trapping a Piece

2/24/2025 – A trapped piece is a piece that has no escape squares or squares where it can safely move without being captured. A trapped piece can be a bishop or a knight, but also ‘heavier’ pieces such as a rook or a queen can be ensnared. Even the king can be put into a position where it no way to move around. Maurizzi dominates Djerba Masters, scores 7½ out of 9

2/23/2025 – French Grandmaster Marc'Andria Maurizzi delivered a commanding performance to win the Djerba Masters, a 10-player single round-robin held on the paradisiac Tunisian island. The 17-year-old secured first place with a round to spare and finished with an impressive 7½/9 score. 2/22/2025 – On 15 February, Sportstar premiered the Sportstar Aces Awards 2025 on their YouTube channel. Divya Deshmukh received the award for sportswoman of the year (non-Olympic). She won the World Junior Girls Championship 2024 and achieved a double gold (individual and team) at the Chess Olympiad. Monaco GP: Lagno prevails in tactical battle, gets the sole lead

2/22/2025 – Kateryna Lagno emerged as the sole leader of the Monaco Women’s Grand Prix after securing the only decisive result in round four. She defeated Elisabeth Paehtz in a tactical encounter marked by mutual time trouble, bringing her score to 3/4 points. Meanwhile, Sara Khadem missed a chance to convert a promising position, and Aleksandra Goryachkina pushed until move 93 but could not break through against Tan Zhongyi. Carlsen beats Nakamura convincingly, wins Chessable Masters

2/22/2025 – Magnus Carlsen emerged victorious in the Chessable Masters Grand Final, defeating Hikaru Nakamura 2½-1½ to claim the title. The Norwegian had already beaten Nakamura in the winners' bracket final and repeated his success with a strong performance. Nakamura missed a key opportunity in game two, and despite needing a win in the fourth game, he could not break Carlsen's resilience. With this result, Carlsen, Nakamura and Ian Nepomniachtchi secured their spots in the Esports World Cup, set for late July.

A short tribute to René Letelier (21 February 1915 - 2 July 2006)

2/21/2025 – Some chess players are remembered mainly for their spectacular defeats. One of them is the Chilean champion René Letelier, who lost a game to Bobby Fischer at the 1960 Chess Olympiad in Leipzig that went down in chess history. But Letelier also had many successes during his career. FIDE awarded him the IM title in 1960, he played for Chile in seven Chess Olympiads and was Chilean Champion five times. And in the course of his long career he played a number of remarkable games.
