Impressive Aravindh wins Prague Masters with 2830 TPR

3/8/2025 – The seventh edition of the Prague Chess Festival concluded with Aravindh Chithambaram winning the Masters section after securing an undefeated 6/9 score. His final-round draw against Ediz Gürel ensured victory as Anish Giri defeated Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, the only player who could have caught him. In the Challengers section, Nodirbek Yakubboev claimed first place after defeating Jonas Buhl Bjerre in a blitz tiebreak. 3/7/2025 – From 26 February to 7 March, ten top grandmasters, including Wei Yi, Praggnanandhaa, Le Quang Liem and Vincent Keymer, will play for tournament victory and prize money in the Prague Masters. The Masters is part of the 7th Prague Chess Festival that also includes a Challengers tournament, an Open and many attractive side events. Round 6 of the Masters and the Challengers starts at 15.00 local time. Follow the games live and with commentary by Sagar Shah and Harshit Raja.

Prague R8: Giri scores, Aravindh closer to tournament victory

3/7/2025 – In round seven of the Masters tournament at the Prague Chess Festival, Indian grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram took the lead in the standings, and in round eight he defended it with a draw against David Navara, as the second-placed player, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, also signed a draw. The wins of the round were achieved by Anish Giri, who won with black against Sam Shankland, and Wei Yi, who benefited from a mistake by Thai Dai Van Nguyen in a rook ending. | Photo: Petr Vrabec

Champions Showdown: Caruana leapfrogs So in the leaderboard

3/6/2025 – The second day of play at the Champions Showdown in Saint Louis saw Fabiano Caruana overtaking Wesley So in the standings after winning their rapid game, with the blitz and semi-classical encounters ending in draws. Hikaru Nakamura and Levon Aronian also secured mini-match victories, with Nakamura defeating Ray Robson in their rapid game and Aronian beating Leinier Dominguez in the semi-classical format. FIDE ratings - March 2025

3/6/2025 – The Tata Steel tournament in Wijk has caused the biggest changes in the current world rankings. Among the winners is World Champion Gukesh, among the losers are Caruana, Erigaisi and also Keymer, who lost some points and places. In the country list, Germany is the best of the rest behind the four chess superpowers USA, India, China and Russia.

Prague R7: Aravindh scores brilliant victory, becomes sole leader

3/6/2025 – The seventh round of the Masters at the Prague Chess Festival saw Aravindh Chithambaram beating Anish Giri with black in what perhaps was the best game of the tournament so far. With this victory, Aravindh took the sole lead in the standings, as Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu was unable to get more than a draw against Wei Yi. Vincent Keymer fared similarly, as he put David Navara under pressure for a long time, but in the end had to be satisfied with half a point. Sam Shankland and Ediz Gürel had more luck: Shankland won with black against Le Quang Liem, while Gürel won with white against Thai Dai Van Nguyen. | Photo: Petr Vrabec

3/5/2025 – GM Lei Tingjie has withdrawn from the 2024–25 FIDE Women's Grand Prix for personal reasons, with compatriot GM Zhu Jiner stepping in as her replacement. Zhu, China's fifth-ranked female player, will now compete in Cyprus, India, and Austria. Prague R5: Wei scores second win in a row

3/3/2025 – The fifth round of the Masters tournament in Prague brought only one victory. Wei Yi managed it against Sam Shankland, who completely failed in the opening. All four other games ended in draws, with Vincent Keymer missing a good chance to score. At the halfway stage, Aravindh Chithambaram and Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu are in the joint lead with 3½ out of 5 points each, a full point ahead of the chasing pack. Looking back at Spassky

3/3/2025 – Boris Spassky died last Thursday, 27 February 2025. An exceptionally fine obituary by Leonard Barden appeared in the Guardian the following day. At 95, Barden continues to write chess columns for The Guardian and Financial Times, demonstrating his enduring passion and expertise in the field. Chess historian Edward Winter likewise presents some excellent material on Spassky.
