1/26/2019 – A completely unexpected resignation from Sam Shankland allowed Anish Giri to catch up with Magnus Carlsen in the standings. A half point behind, the only chaser is Ian Nepomniachtchi, who grabbed an important win over Vladimir Fedoseev. In other news, Vladimir Kramnik got his first victory this year, while Vladislav Kovalev won the only decisive game of the Challengers and joined Maksim Chigaev at the top of the standings. Grand Chess Tour 2019 gains four new countries

1/25/2019 – The Grand Chess Tour is expanding in 2019 to eight tournaments. The Your Next Move Blitz and Rapid in Leuven is replaced by tournaments in India, Ivory Coast and Romania and a new classical tournament is planned for Croatia. Tata Steel Chess: Carlsen takes the lead

1/24/2019 – Round 10 had a lot to offer chess fans. Carlsen won a long endgame against Anand and with it, the World Champion surges to the top of the field. GM TIGER HILLARP-PERSSON analyses the marquee game of the round. We also saw exciting attacking victories from Vidit Gujrathi (against Vladimir Kramnik) and Jorden van Foreest (against Ian Nepomniachtchi). Start of the Gibraltar Masters

The Road to the 2020 Candidates

1/23/2019 – The road to the Candidates tournament in 2020 is starting to emerge. World Chess / Agon will no longer organise either the Candidates or the 2020 World Championship match. FIDE has launched a new qualification path — the FIDE "Grand Swiss"— a Swiss tournament for which 100 players will be eligible. The winner (and maybe more) qualify for the Candidates Tournament.
