8/26/2021 – The region of Saint Emilion near Bordeaux is renowned for producing some of the world’s finest wines. Hundreds of hectares of vineyards belonging to different domains dominate the landscape. One of these enchanting wine estates was the venue of a rapid chess tournament held on August 22. Sinquefield Cup - MVL wins

8/26/2021 – After a quick draw against Mamedyarov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the 2021 Sinquefield Cup, securing clear first place after his closest rivals were unable to catch him in the ninth and final round. MVL is the first two-time clear winner of the event, having also taken first place in the 2017 edition. 8/25/2021 – The Spanish Individual Championship took place on August 16-24 in Linares. Eduardo Iturrizaga won the event in his first try, as he switched federations earlier this year. The 31-year-old star from Caracas also won the rapid tournament played before the classical event; Paco Vallejo won the blitz. Among the women, Sabrina Vega won her eighth title with a round to spare. 8/25/2021 – In yet another action-packed round in Saint Louis, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave grabbed the sole lead at the Sinquefield Cup by beating Jeffery Xiong from the white side of a Berlin Defence. Fabiano Caruana, who had lost against Xiong in the previous round, bounced back by defeating Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in a double-edged encounter. Starting Thursday: European Championship in Reyjkavik

8/24/2021 – The 2021 European Individual Championship is set to take place from August 26 to September 5 at the Hotel Natura (pictured) in Reykjavík, Iceland. A field of 184 players will fight to get a share of the €100,000 prize fund and one of the 23 spots at the FIDE World Cup that are in offer. The FIDE Online Chess Olympiad has started

8/22/2021 – The 2021 FIDE Online Olympiad is taking place from August 20th to September 15th. It is a national teams event in which all federations affiliated to FIDE have the right to participate. Teams consist of six players, with a minimum of three female players and two junior players. Played online on chess.com, the event features two main stages: the Divisions stage, and the Play-offs stage. All games are played with a 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move time control.

Elina Danielian wins the European Women’s Championship

8/21/2021 – The European Women’s Championship came to an end on Friday, with Armenia’s Elina Danielian winning the title as the only player who collected 9/11 points in Iasi, Romania. In the final round, Danielian clinched clear first place by beating Estonian WIM Mai Narva on top board. Draws were seen on boards 2 to 6.
