A crushing counterblow

by Karsten Müller
8/9/2022 – A piece that is attacked does not have to move - that sounds like a trivial little piece of wisdom but it is good to keep it in mind. In the diagrammed position Black just attacked White's rook with 49...Ke5, apparently forgetting that attacked pieces do not have to move. How should White react to Black's attack?

Dear Karsten,
again a nice little position with a whole range of subtleties. I like that!
One addition maybe: In the line 50.Kh4! Rg8 51.Rd3! Ke4 52.Rd1 Rg4+ 53.Kxh5 Rxg3 54.d6! Black can try 54..Kf5!? 55.Rd5+! Ke6 56.d7! Kxd5 57.d8Q+ Ke4, when White has to win queen against rook.
Alternatively White can slowroll by 53.Kh3 Rg7 54.d6 Rd7 55.Kh4 Kf5 56.Rd2 Kg6 57.Rd5 +- winning a second pawn in the rook ending.
Best wishes,
