Winter Has Come

4/13/2022 – "Winter is Coming" is the title of a book by Garry Kasparov published in 2015. In it he warned that Russia’s descent from a nascent democracy into a full-blown dictatorship under Vladimir Putin made it a threat to the West and world peace. "Garry could be forgiven for declaring: I bloody told you so," writes Malcolm Pein in the April 2022 edition of CHESS Magazine. In it he describes the consequences the Russian invasion of Ukraine has for the world of chess.

New trends in the Schara von Hennig Gambit

4/13/2022 – After the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd5 Black usually chooses the classical Tarrasch Defence with 4...exd5. 4...cxd4, on the other hand, leads to the Schara von Hennig Gambit. Still quite popular in the 90s, this gambit went out of fashion in the meantime. But recently a series of online games at the highest level (above all thanks to Alexander Grischuk) generated new interest. Robert Ris presents the latest developments in his opening video for the ChessBase Magazine Extra #206. Watch an excerpt from his video analysis!

BCM: Reshevsky on Russian chess

4/12/2022 – Between 16 and 24 June 1954 a match was held in New York’s Hotel Roosevelt between the Soviet and the US chess teams. The eight-board, four-round match ended with a decisive 20-12 victory for the Soviets. In an article for the New York Times ahead of the match, US chess champion Samuel Reshevsky shared his thoughts on how the Soviets (whom he kept calling ‘the Russians’) became so good at chess and why this was so important to them. Ding Liren on his way to the Candidates

4/11/2022 – Ding Liren, currently the world's number three, has very good chances to play in the Candidates Tournament as the highest-rated, eligible player in FIDE’s ranking list published on 1 May. However, to qualify and to replace the suspended Sergey Karjakin, Ding needs to have played 30 FIDE-rated games from May 2021 to May 2022. When Karjakin was suspended by the FIDE for supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Ding had just played four of the required 30 games, but now he is catching up: after a four-player, twelve-round tournament in Hangzhou, he played a six-game match against Wei Yi. After five draws, Ding won the last game and the match. | Photos: Imedia

Anand, Topalov and semi-retired Wang to play at Norway Chess

4/9/2022 – From 31 May to 10 June, the Norway Chess Tournament will be held for the tenth time in Stavanger. Perhaps the most surprising participant, though, is Wang Hao, who had announced his retirement from professional competitions about a year ago.
