Game of the Week #516

Besides the Superbet Chess Classic, which was won by MVL after some tense tiebreak games versus So and Aronian, another two rounds of the German Bundesliga were played in the past weekend.

My team HSK 2 is actually leading in the 2nd Bundesliga Nord, with my teammate and Fritztrainer Nico Zwirs scoring an excellent two out of two on the top board this weekend. As our Game of the Week we will examine Nico's instructive win with Black against Theo Gungl.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

T. Gungl vs N. Zwirs, Germany 2022
Position after 12.Ba3

This week’s show

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
