Wijk aan Zee Fifty Years Ago

1/12/2026 – The former fishing village of Wijk aan Zee is world-famous, at least in the chess world. Virtually all world-class players, including almost all world champions, have passed through here. The long-standing sponsor has always been the steelworks in IJmuiden. The chess tradition is very old. Fifty years ago, some things were different from today, but much was already much the same as it is now. | Photo: Rob Mieremet, Anefo

Faustino Oro and Magnus Carlsen play blitz

1/12/2026 – On January 6, Magnus Carlsen and the 12-year-old Argentine Faustino Oro, who still has good chances of becoming the youngest grandmaster of all time, played Titled Tuesday at the Take Take Take Studio in Oslo. Afterwards, they chatted briefly and played a blitz game (3+2). Of course, “nothing” was at stake — but of course games between young talents, who may one day become world champions, and established or former world champions are always exciting and a battle for prestige. And this perhaps one day historically significant duel was captured on video.

The event also featured an undefeated run by ten-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan and a closely contested fight for the remaining podium places. | Pictured: Kosteniuk, Batsiashvili and third-placed Sofio Gvetadze. | Photo: European Chess Union

Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: Zukertort System Wei Yi-So

1/11/2026 – In the game Wei Yi-So, White opted for the Zukertort System which is gaining more popularity lately. In my video course The Menacing Colle & Zukertort System for the Club Player I discussed the unusual concept with castling queenside for White and I am glad to see the Chinese top player followed by recommendation. Despite the disappointing result, White had all the reasons to be satisfied with the outcome of the opening and got a promising attack. In timetrouble some huge chances to convert were not taken and White even lost due to a cruel blunder.

Review: 60 Minutes against Caro-Kann

1/11/2026 – The concept behind ChessBase’s “60 Minutes” courses is simple: a one-hour video course for just under ten euros. There are also courses on middlegame or endgame topics, but most of them present rather “specialised” opening lines. In the second instalment of a small series, Jochen Schwarz introduces the most important 60 Minutes courses for 1.e4 players against the Caro-Kann Defence.

Jon Speelman: Creeping, sliding and the ice rink of memory

1/10/2026 – In this analytical column, GM Jon Speelman examines the disproportionate power of subtle “creeping” moves in chess. Using examples from games by Alireza Firouzja, Boris Spassky (pictured in 1964) and Garry Kasparov, he shows how small, almost inconspicuous piece shifts can radically alter complex positions. Blending modern encounters with classic material and personal recollections, Speelman explains why these quiet moves are so hard to anticipate and so decisive when they occur. | Photo: P. van Zoest / ANP, via geheugenvannederland.nl

The title was decided in dramatic fashion in the final round, where top seed Eline Roebers defeated long-time leader Bella Khotenashvili to secure tournament victory. | Pictured: The start of the crucial Roebers v. Game of the Week #705: Both players could have won

1/9/2026 – We are starting 2026 with a wildly romantic game between Yair Parkhov and Lazaro Bruzon Batista from the Pan-American Intercollegiate Championship. Often our Game of the Week is a model game by one side, but this game both players could have won. The Sicilian Najdorf with the sharp old main line 6.Bg5 can easily get completely out of the control. There are many possible piece sacrifices and soon the all the variations become too difficult to calculate, even for grandmasters. | Merijn's show is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. 1/9/2026 – Black's continuation in the diagram position does not lead to a win, but puts his opponent under so much pressure that four moves later he misses a mate combination - hopefully you won't!

Tata Steel Chess India: Nihal draws level with Anand at the top

1/9/2026 – The second day of the Tata Steel Chess India tournament brought further movement in the standings ahead of the final rapid rounds. In the open section, Vishy Anand remained at the top, now joined by Nihal Sarin after the young Indian's perfect day. Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: The Anti-Meran Explained: Carlsen vs Artemiev

1/8/2026 – First of all, I'd like to wish the viewers all the best for the New Year 2026 with a lot of exciting Fast & Furious episodes! In the last week of 2025 Magnus Carlsen managed to add two more World Championships to his CV by winning both the Rapid and Blitz section. I have a look at his black game against Artemiev from the Rapid event, in which he chose one of his favorite lines in the Anti-Meran which had served the Norwegian pretty well on previous occasions. In the current game, things were less fun for Black due to a grave error on move 15 after which White was completely winning. Come and watch if you are interested in learning more about this specific variation!
