17th Malaysian Chess Festival

It is a mix of Classical, Rapid as well as Blitz events in a multi-day spectacle, rather than the narrower focus on Classical time formats at other long-running chess festivals. Cash prizes in excess of US $28,000 are up for grabs, titled chess players are given exemptions of entry fees.

Chess returns to India

8/4/2022 – The game was invented in the 6th century in north-western India, from where it migrated to the west and conquered the world. Now India is on the verge of becoming the ultimate super-power of chess. Our report includes a nice video summary of the performance of the Indian teams at the Chennai Olympiad so far.

Fifty years ago: Fischer leads 6½:3½

8/4/2022 – After the first two traumatic games World Champion Boris Spassky was leading 2-0 in the Match of the Century. But then Fischer started to play and struck back: in the next eight games he scored 6½ points, chalking up a 6.5-3.5 lead. Games 8, 9 and 10 were quite spectacular, and are the subject of today's report – exactly fifty years after game ten. Younger players will also learn about "adjournments" and how exactly "sealed moves" were handled. Some were born after these practices were abandoned.

Investigation of a combination

8/3/2022 – When dealing with a complex tactic there are usually two outcomes: a leap of intuition leads us to a Eureka epiphany, or we fail miserably, with the engine telling us what the move was, but we remain no closer to knowing how to solve it the next time. Here we analyze a less than obvious solution and how one might reach it through meticulous logic and internal debate.

Study of the Month - Up to five pieces allowed

7/31/2022 – The term "malyutka" - "baby" - is used for endgame studies with up to five pieces. The art of such studies is very old, but some modern composers extensively researched such positions. Obviously, endgame tablebases made composing such endgame studies easier in the late 20th century, and it seems that there can't be much variety with only three pieces apart from the kings. Yet, even with so few pieces, some interesting ideas can be found.| Photos: Pixabay

But Judit Polgar and Mikhail Botvinnik, two other notable Leo's, tower over both players. The world champion and top female chess player have contributed to the development of the game massively. But even Polgar and Botvinnik can't compete with one of the most well-known celebrities in history who also knew how to play chess - Napoleon Bonaparte. | Foto: Pixabay
