Eindhoven Wins Alma Mater University Chess Tournament in Bologna

6/20/2024 – The University of Bologna in Italy was founded in 1088 and is the oldest university in the world. It was at its foundation that the word "Universitas" was first coined. From 14 to 16 June, sixteen universities, including some of the most prestigious in the world (such as Yale, Cambridge and the Sorbonne), took part in the First Alma Mater University Chess Tournament for Teams, held in the most picturesque hall of the University Library in Bologna, the Aula Magna. Eindhoven won, Politecnico di Milano came second. Roberto Mesa reports.

The risk of playing chess

6/19/2024 – There is something very special about playing chess. During a game your heart often races and your blood pressure rises. Evolution has set this up: in times of stress, pour out adrenaline and prepare the individual for a physical fight – or a lightening retreat. Can it be healthy for chess players to experience this while they sit motionless, for a number of hours? In part three of their series, Prof. Christian Hesse and Frederic Friedel discuss this question.

Spanish GM Jaime Santos scored 8/10 to finish third. Vishy Anand’s presence as a VIP guest added more to the prestige of the event. | Photo: Federația Română de Șah

Jan Markos: Middlegame Secrets Vol.4 - The Secrets Lives of Knights

6/19/2024 – For a chess player, chess pieces are like specific tools in a toolbox. We need to know how best to use them, just as a craftsman knows his tools. We shouldn’t use a screwdriver to hammer in a nail; and we shouldn’t position the knights on the edge of the board. Knights are mysterious creatures. They add irrational content to any position. However, in this video tutorial you will learn how to tame them.
