Prague Chess Festival 2025 - An interview with Thai Dai Van Nguyen

by ChessBase
2/24/2025 – The 7th Prague Chess Festival kicks off on Tuesday 25 February. Among the players is Czech grandmaster Thai Dai Van Nguyen, who won the Challengers Tournament in Wijk aan Zee in January. He is ranked ninth in the Masters, but last year he finished just half a point behind the winner, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, in joint second to fourth place. In a short interview published on the festival website, he talked about his expectations for this year's tournament and revealed which game he is particularly looking forward to. | Photo: Thai Dai Van Nguyen in Wijk 2025 | Photo: Lennart Ootes

This year, you claimed individual gold at the Chess Olympiad and a title at the European Chess Club Cup. How do you evaluate 2024?

Winning Olympiad gold is definitely my greatest chess achievement. Adding the Club Cup gold and the PICF silver, 2024 was without a doubt the most successful year of my career.

You started 2025 on a high note as well. Winning the Challengers tournament in Wijk aan Zee is a prestigious accomplishment. How do you feel just days after this triumph?

The first place from Challengers in Wijk aan Zee might not seem like a great success to the general public, but for me personally, it means a lot – I consider it my second greatest success after the Olympiad gold. Wijk aan Zee is one of the most prestigious chess tournaments with a rich tradition and history. Plus, this win guarantees my spot in the Masters next year, giving me a unique opportunity to play against the world’s top players.

After strong individual and team results, you now face the 7th edition of PICF. Last year, you secured second place in a tough competition, setting the bar high. How do you feel about this year's challenge?

From a purely chess perspective, my performance at the Prague Chess Festival last year was of a high quality. I had to prove myself against stronger players, starting from the last spot. The result was a great surprise for me, so it’s hard to set expectations to surpass it. Most of all, I just want to enjoy the tournament.

Last year’s Masters featured some of the great names of the chess world. Which player are you most looking forward to facing this time?

The lineup is so strong that it’s hard to choose just one, but I’m definitely looking forward to playing Giri. I’ve spoken with him occasionally, but we’ve never played against each other.

Prague is hosting its 7th edition, and the Festival is growing in all aspects—not just in popularity and in player strength. How do you percieve the quality of the Festival?

The Prague Chess Festival is my favorite tournament. I’ve had the chance to play in all its editions since the first year. The organization is excellent, the competition is strong, and playing in Prague in front of a home crowd is always a great experience.
