Sinquefield Cup - MVL wins

8/26/2021 – After a quick draw against Mamedyarov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the 2021 Sinquefield Cup, securing clear first place after his closest rivals were unable to catch him in the ninth and final round. MVL is the first two-time clear winner of the event, having also taken first place in the 2017 edition. For his efforts, Vachier-Lagrave earns $90,000 in prize money, as well as a bonus $50,000 for finishing second in the overall Grand Chess Tour. | Photo: Crystal Fuller

The tournament is a 10-player single round robin with a time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus 30-second increments from move 1.

Let's remember that Svidler was a last minute replacement, he was originally there to be a commentator. Without time to fully prepare against this level of competition it is no surprise he is not having a good result.

Svidler is amazing to have won the Russian championship so many times; however given his great strength he doesn't seem to have won his share of elite invitational tournaments. How many has he won?

Svidler is just having a bad tournament. It happens. If you're 30 then people say you're off form but if you're over 40 then they say it's due to age. Korchnoi was 47 and 50 when he played his two matches for the world championship.

Oh well looks like Sam's opponents are using small Steps 2 success against him. But nice game Sam and MVL.
