Fundraiser tournament to support Tymek Kalata's battle with DMD

1/17/2025 – 13-year-old Tymoteusz Kalata from Poland has been fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) since he was six months old. Despite the struggles this condition brings, his love for chess has remained unaffected. However, due to the high costs of his medical treatment, Tymek’s family is reaching out for support from the chess community. Chess highlight in August: The Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2025

1/15/2025 – The International Dortmund Chess Days will take place from 2 August to 10 August 2025 in the heart of the Ruhr region. The 52nd edition will once again be a chess festival for players of all classes with A-Open and B-Open. In the Open, top German players will compete with international grandmasters for a €20,000 prize fund. The two best German female chess players will play in parallel in an international women's tournament. Johor Chess Association invites you to 9th Johor Open 2025 in Malaysia

1/13/2025 – Johor Chess Association invites you to 9th Johor International Open 2025. The tournament has two categories - Open and Challengers (Below 2000). The top three prizes in Open are RM 10000, 6000 and 4000. For Challengers, the top three prizes are RM 1300, 1000 and 800. A total of 3 GMs, 11 IMs and a WIM have registered from eight countries across the world. Entry is Free for GM, IM and players rated above 2300 in the Open section. Last date is extended to 16th January without any penalty in entry fees. There are few conditions offered for GMs rated above 2400 and IMs rated above 2300. IM Nitin S and Venkatesh M R are the only two Indians to have won this tournament in 2014 and 2017 respectively. The next one can be you. A hundred years ago: Moscow 1925

1/13/2025 – The 1925 chess tournament held in Moscow was a groundbreaking event in chess history. The International Chess Tournament was the world's first state-sponsored chess tournament. It featured 21 players –eleven international stars and ten Soviet masters. It was won by Efim Bogoljubow, who finished ahead of Lasker and Capablanca, the reigning world champion. Against him Bogoljubow played one of the most and complex one of the most widely discussed games in history.

Bundesliga: Carlsen scores 1½/2 for St. Pauli, Düsseldorf and Baden-Baden share the lead

1/12/2025 – Rounds 5 and 6 of the 2024/25 Chess Bundesliga saw significant developments, including Magnus Carlsen's return to the league after many years, helping St. Pauli secure their first win of the season before losing to leaders from Düsseldorf. Viernheim defeated perennial favourites Baden-Baden in round 5 and then overcame Deizisau, who entered round 6 as sole leaders.
