Conceptualizing in calculation

8/29/2022 – In chess we are taught there are two main ways of thinking about a position: conceptualization for broader overviews of the situation at hand, and calculation/tactics that are the cogs behind every move. These are often taught as choosing one method or the other, yet sometimes this dogmatism must be cast aside and flexibility is required.

Study of the Month - Alexander Petrovich Kazantsev: A life between science, fiction, and science-fiction

8/27/2022 – On 30 June 1908, just after 7 AM (all dates correspond to our Gregorian calendar), an explosion occurred in the harsh forests in Siberia near the Tunguska river. The explosion happened over an area that is nearly unpopulated, so apart from an estimated 80 million trees (and, we suppose, the wildlife in that area of 2150 km²) only three humans died in the event that would likely have been a major catastrophe if it had happened over a densely populated area.| Photos: Pixabay

Tips from the coach of the Olympic champion

8/26/2022 – Ivan Sokolov has celebrated numerous successes in his career as a player. His greatest coup as a coach came only recently at the Chess Olympiad 2022 in Chennai, when he led the team from Uzbekistan to gold. In his video contribution to the current ChessBase Magazine Extra #208 he presents an idea on how to surprise your opponent in the Sicilian Four Knights Variation: The move 6.g3 may not look particularly aggressive - but when a player like Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzbekistan's number one and reigning rapid chess world champion) is on a loss with Black a few moves later, that can easily happen to your opponent too! You can see an excerpt from Sokolov's analysis here.

50 years ago: Fischer-Spassky, Secret weapons?

8/25/2022 – After draws in games 14 and 15, Fischer still had a three-point lead in the World Championship match, and the Spassky side was getting nervous. The Champion was fighting hard, but not getting any points. Suspicion arose that Fischer might be using secret weapons: hypnosis, devices planted in the lights or the chairs, and even perhaps assistance from an "IBM" (Russian for "computer" at the time). All this was formally investigated, while Fischer continued to coast.

The Winning Academy 13: Facing a Weaker Opponent? Avoid these mistakes!

8/24/2022 – Beating weaker opponents is important for having success in chess, and the better you play, the more important this skill is.
