5/14/2023 – On 14 May 1937 Grigory Levenfish won the 10th Soviet Championship, defending the title he had won two years earlier at the 9th Soviet Championship in 1935. In 1937 Levenfish also drew a match against Botvinnik and hoped to play in the 1938 AVRO tournament. At that time Levenfish was probably one of the best players in the world, but the Soviet authorities stifled his career. 5/14/2023 – Alireza Firouzja joined Fabiano Caruana in the lead of the Superbet Chess Classic after beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in the tournament’s seventh round. The other decisive game of the day saw Anish Giri claiming his first win in Bucharest by beating Ding Liren with white. 5/13/2023 – Andrzej Filipowicz is one of the most interesting chess personalities in the world. He has been a chess player, arbiter, organizer, editor and writer, as well as a civil engineer specializing in steel structures. Endowed with a strong personality, clear intelligence, well-defined convictions and a curious sense of humour, he is turning 85 today, on 13 May 2023. Uvencio Blanco conducted a lengthy interview with the Polish chess polymath.

Fabiano Caruana could have extended his lead, but failed to take down Alireza Firouzja from an advantageous position. Similarly, Wesley So got a clear edge against Ding Liren, but first missed a few tactical chances and then decided to force a threefold repetition from a still superior position. 5/12/2023 – Grandmaster András Adorján died yesterday after a long illness. He was the runner-up at the 1969 World Junior Championship behind Anatoly Karpov, and reached the quarterfinals of the Candidates Matches in the 1979-1981 World Championship cycle. 5/11/2023 – Peter Svidler became the outright winner of the TePe Sigeman & Co tournament after collecting 4½/7 points. Svidler entered the final round sharing the lead with Abhimanyu Mishra. The 8-time Russian champion had black against top seed Gukesh, while Abhimanyu had white against an out-of-form Boris Gelfand.
