Leon Luke clinches Baku Open

5/15/2023 – GM Leon Luke Mendonca scored an emphatic victory in the final round of Baku Open 2023. He finished with the same score 7/9 as GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB) and GM Vladislav Kovalev, but won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. The performance rating of the 17-year-old: 2732. This is Leon's third rating open triumph in less than 2.5 months and five podium finishes in his last six strong open events. Grigory Levenfish (27 March 1889 - 9 February 1961): The Outsider of the Soviet Chess Champions

5/14/2023 – On 14 May 1937 Grigory Levenfish won the 10th Soviet Championship, defending the title he had won two years earlier at the 9th Soviet Championship in 1935. In 1937 Levenfish also drew a match against Botvinnik and hoped to play in the 1938 AVRO tournament. At that time Levenfish was probably one of the best players in the world, but the Soviet authorities stifled his career. Superbet Classic: Hard-fought draws, Caruana and So miss chances

5/13/2023 – There was no lack of entertaiment in round 6 of the Superbet Chess Classic, despite all five games finishing drawn. Fabiano Caruana could have extended his lead, but failed to take down Alireza Firouzja from an advantageous position. Similarly, Wesley So got a clear edge against Ding Liren, but first missed a few tactical chances and then decided to force a threefold repetition from a still superior position. András Adorján (1950-2023)

5/12/2023 – Grandmaster András Adorján died yesterday after a long illness. He was the runner-up at the 1969 World Junior Championship behind Anatoly Karpov, and reached the quarterfinals of the Candidates Matches in the 1979-1981 World Championship cycle.
