Biel: Pragg delivers in the blitz to stay in the race

7/22/2024 – The blitz section of the GM Triathlons at the Biel Chess Festival decided which players would qualify for the final phase and thus fight for the 2024 title. There was particular tension in the Masters, where the Indian superstar Praggnanandhaa had to work hard to make it through, as he had a strong showing to qualify in third place after all. US Seniors and Juniors: Akopian, Yoo and Su sole leaders

7/21/2024 – With 5 out of 9 rounds played at the US Senior, US Junior and US Girls Championships, the three concurrent events have sole leaders atop the standings. In the Senior tournament, Vladimir Akopian leads with 4½ points, as only Gregory Kaidanov managed to hold him to a draw in the first 5 rounds of play. 7/21/2024 – Two French representatives reached the final in the Division I winners' bracket of the CrunchLab Masters: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who defeated Magnus Carlsen, and Alireza Firouzja, who got the better of Jan-Krzysztof Duda. MVL needed to work hard to beat the world rapid and blitz champion, as their match, featuring all decisive games, went to Armageddon. Congratulations: FIDE turns 100!

7/20/2024 – Today, on July 20, 2024, FIDE has scheduled a celebration in Paris to mark 100 years since it was officially formed in the French capital. FIDE is marking its centenary with many different programs aimed at existing and new chess fans around the globe – be they schoolchildren, refugees, people in prisons, charities, club players, or newcomers to the game! The highlights: an Olympic-style torch relay and a Guinness Book record attempt.

Ziaur Rahman, Bangladeshi chess legend

7/18/2024 – Ziaur Rahman, the second grandmaster of Bangladesh and the player to have reached the highest rating in his country (2570), passed away on 5 July while playing a game of chess at the Bangladeshi National Championships. He suffered a heart attack and collapsed to the ground. Ziaur was just 50 years old. Biel: Abhimanyu and Vaishali continue to impress

7/17/2024 – Abhimanyu Mishra took the lead at the Masters Triathlon in Biel. Thanks to his victory over Sam Shankland, the youngest GM in history climbed to the top of the standings. He also benefited from the fact that the other games ended in draws, in particular from the fact that Haik Martirosyan was unable to capitalise on a promising position against Vincent Keymer.
