Press Release by New in Chess

Dear Chess Friend,

Big news: we have been acquired by the Play Magnus Group, and from now on we will partner with other Group members like Chessable and Chess24.

Magnus Carlsen, World Chess Champion and a co-founder of the PM Group, has been a subscriber to New In Chess magazine for over 20 years.

Carlsen said (and I will not hide our delight in his words): 'Bringing New In Chess into the Group is a special moment to me, as I have always looked forward to enjoying the game notes of my fellow grandmasters and studying the historical gems published in New In Chess magazines. I have known the team since early on in my career and am glad that Play Magnus Group will continue the New In Chess legacy and inspire young players of the game for years to come.’

So there you have it. I am proud of the company we have built and I believe that becoming part of Play Magnus Group will help our magazine, books and Yearbook to reach more chess players around the world. The chess boom caused by the Netflix hit-series The Queen’s Gambit, has brought us record-breaking book sales in the past months. Our future within Play Magnus Group looks bright.

There is, by the way, no reason to worry that we will change our ways. New In Chess magazine will continue to enjoy full editorial independence, we will continue to publish great chess books, and the Yearbook will continue to cover opening news for advanced players, four times a year.

We are looking forward to being of service to you!

Best wishes,
Allard Hoogland
New In Chess

@besominov Funny that you just made a post here for the Chessbase forum.... Chessabase has de facto the monopoly of commercial chess databases.

>>"Good news that the independent future for NIC has been secured."

Sarcasm? They've just been bought, that's the opposite of independent.

The Play Magnus Group is slowly building a monopoly. Monopolies are never a good thing. Has ChessBase gotten any offers yet?

Hahaha. Sure. Just don't say anything bad about Magnus or the Magnus Group. Amirite?

Good news that the independent future for NIC has been secured.

I appreciate that NIC puts an effort into designing quality book covers.

I'm sad Magnus didn't buy Chess Evolution instead, though.

Just now
Keith Homeyard - Yep, amazon now and if I want to buy a Thinkers Publishing book I get it from TP directly. Fast shipping, top notch customer service. Never touching NIC again.. I even had problems with their NIC yearbook App where some issues weren't coming up that I had paid for as part of the subscription (they weren't able to resolve it for me).

basler88 - i have had orders take that long as well .. just insane.

The book orders are taking 2 - 3 month!! My last order from Nov. 30 is still not processed on my NiC account!!! No explanation what's going on! This will be my last purchase from NiC, I'll go thru Amazon as I don't have any postage.
tinhau you're lucky, I never get an answer from NiC, it's a very bad customer service.

tinhau:- I've usually ordered New in Chess books from amazon, cheaper as postage much less. They've always arrived undamaged! :)

Congrats! What was the purchase price?
tinhau tinhau 2/1/2021 07:28
Have ordered several times from them in the past but the books always come damaged even after several complaints.

Funny ! M. Carlsen doesn't comment his own games in NIC Magazine.

Very interesting news on the merits. Plus, I am very impressed to read ChessBase News covering a competitor in positive (or at least neutral) fashion. In other lines of business one would never know a competitor exists until it is time to attack them.
