Russian Championships Higher League

Apart from tournament winner Maksim Chigaev, Mikhail Antipov, Vladimir Fedoseev, Alexey Goganov and Andrey Esipenko qualified for the Superfinal. But number one seed Vladislav Artemiev did not really find his rhythm in this tournament and finished tenth and failed to qualify for the Superfinal.

Two women started in the Open section: Aleksandra Goryachkina and Polina Shuvalova. With 5½/9 Goryachkina had one point less than Chigaev and finished 12th. Shuvalova scored 4½/9 and also had a good tournament.

The 23-year old Chigaev started with 5.0/6, and then finished with three draws to safely qualify for the Superfinal. In round six Chigaev scored a crucial win with Black against Mikhail Antipov, and showed why the pawn on e4 can become a target in the Italian.
