Le wins 4 out of 5 classical games

Defending champion Le Quang Liem took the lead at the Grandmaster Triathlon in after convincingly beating top seed Yu Yangyi with the black pieces. The remaining three games all ended in draws. Former co-leaders David Navara and Vincent Keymer thus slipped to shared second place, two points behind the Vietnamese frontrunner (in the classical portion of the tournament, wins are worth 4 points, while draws grant 1½ points to each of the contenders).

Le was the top scorer in classical chess last year, and is again impressing in that discipline this time around. The Vietnamese grandmaster has won four out of five classical games so far, two of them with the black pieces. Only against Keymer did Le suffer a loss in classical chess so far.

Keymer, as well as Navara, the co-leaders going into Monday’s round, signed a draw in their direct duel. Both are still undefeated in the classical section of the Triathlon. Keymer might be upset after the draw, as he failed to take advantage of a blunder by Navara on move 30.

The players in the second half of the table all failed to make any progress. Arjun Erigaisi versus Jules Moussard and Bassem Amin versus Bogdan-Daniel Deac finished drawn.
