Global Chess League: Schedule and unique scoring system announced

6/17/2023 – Ahead of the inaugural edition of the Global Chess League (GCL), the league has announced the tournament’s schedule and the scoring system. Remarkably, a game won with the black pieces will result in 4 Game Points (GP) for the winning player; a victory for a player with the white pieces will see them win 3 GP. The tournament will take place from June 21 to July 2 in Dubai.

Alice Lee earns third IM norm at age 13

6/17/2023 – Alice Lee, aged 13, is considered one of the biggest talents in the United States. In March, she finished second in the highly competitive American Cup after narrowly losing to Irina Krush in a playoff. The youngster has now earned her third and final IM norm at the Canadian Transnational Open in Montreal. Frederik Svane leads Teplice Open with two rounds to go

6/17/2023 – With five wins in as many games, Frederik Svane had a brilliant start at the traditional open event in Teplice, Czech Republic. It was only in round 6 that the 19-year-old GM, who plays for the Hamburg Chess Club in the Bundesliga, conceded his first draw, against his brother Rasmus. The ASEAN+ Age Group is back after three years

6/17/2023 – The ASEAN Age Group Championships is an extremely important event for young kids living in the ASEAN countries. They include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar. Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timur Leste. However, if you look at the name carefully, it says ASEAN+ and the + indicates that more countries are welcome at the championships — China, India, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea. It will be held in 14 age groups from the 17th to the 27th of June 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand. Along with this tournament, there is also an ACC-ECU symposium which will witness the presence of Artur Yusupov, Zurab Azmaiparashvili and many other famous names.

The Serbian Championships 2023 took place on June 6–14 in Senta, with the open and women’s tournaments running concurrently. Robert Ris: Playing with four queens on the board!

6/15/2023 – The Cairns Cup is the strongest privately organized women’s tournament in the world. The third edition of the event came to an end on Monday, with Anna Zatonskih stunning the chess world by winning the closed competition with a round to spare. Alexandra Kosteniuk finished in second place, after grabbing three wins in a row in the final rounds. 10th Dhamso International Chess Festival in Sri Lanka

6/14/2023 – The 10th Dhamso International Chess Festival was held on May 26-30 at the Hotel Lavanga Resort & Spa in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. In the main event, IM Mohan Kushara (pictured) won the championship by scoring 9/10 points, while R M Dulinma Hemalni Rathnayake won the women’s championship after scoring 7/10 points. More than 660 players competed in the event which included one GM, two IMs, one FM and three Arena FMs from four different countries: Azerbaijan, India, Russia and Sri Lanka.

Joining Carlsen in the top tier will be Levon Aronian, Wesley So, and the Venezuelan-born Spanish Eduardo Iturrizaga who all progressed through a challenging Swiss event before winning their respective rapid matches against other top-eight finishers.

Cairns Cup: Alexandra Kosteniuk clinches second place

6/13/2023 – The ninth round of the Cairns Cup saw Alexandra Kosteniuk grabbing a third consecutive win to secure clear second place in the final standings. Kosteniuk defeated Elisabeth Paehtz with black, while Irina Krush, who was sharing second place with Kosteniuk before the final round, failed to get the better of tournament winner Anna Zatonskih in a tricky endgame. Armageddon in Berlin: Day 1 - Duda wins against Adams, Keymer beats Donchenko

6/13/2023 – The first day of the Europe and Africa Regional qualifier kicked off with a top match between British number one Michael Adams and Poland's top player Jan-Krzysztof Duda. After several ups and downs Duda won with a bit of luck. The second match of the day saw an all-German clash between Vincent Keymer and Alexander Donchenko, in which Keymer (pictured) was a bit more lucky and won.

6/13/2023 – The FIDE World Cup, a knock-out chess extravaganza held every two years, will celebrate its 10th edition in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 30 July to 24 August 2023. Many of the participants in the open and the women’s sections have confirmed their presence. Heading the open will be Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana, while the women’s event will have Humpy Koneru, Ju Wenjun and Aleksandra Goryachkina as the top seeds. The fields will be completed before June 30.
