Munich GP: Kosteniuk keeps the lead as all games are drawn

2/9/2023 – Following the rest day, players returned well-prepared to the playing hall in Munich and drew all their games in round 6 of the Women’s Grand Prix. Alexandra Kosteniuk thus kept her 1½-point lead in the standings. Airthings Masters: Carlsen beats Nakamura in Armageddon

2/9/2023 – Magnus Carlsen advanced to the Grand Final of the Airthings Masters by beating Hikaru Nakamura in the winners’ bracket final. All four 15-minute games were drawn in the all-star showdown, leading to a sudden-death decider. Carlsen, who presented a bid merely one second shorter than Nakamura’s, drew with black in Armageddon to win the match. Nakamura will face either Wesley So or Arjun Erigaisi in the final of the losers’ bracket.

Belgian Grandmaster Luc Winants (1 January 1963 – 7 February 2023) died

2/8/2023 – For many years, Luc Winants was Belgium's best chess player and at times the country's only grandmaster. Airthings Masters: Carlsen and Nakamura set up showdown

2/8/2023 – The two strongest and most consistent online-chess players in the world reached the final (in the winners’ bracket) of the Airthings Masters. Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura both drew their rapid encounters against Arjun Erigaisi and Wesley So, respectively, and went on to draw with black in Armageddon deciders to set up a much-anticipated showdown. Meanwhile, Alexey Sarana and Dommaraju Gukesh remain in contention in the losers’ bracket.

Airthings Masters: Arjun stuns Firouzja

2/7/2023 – Three out of four quarterfinal matches in Division I of the Airthings Masters had clear winners — i.e. players who only needed three games to remain in the winners’ bracket. One of these three players was Arjun Erigaisi, as he scored three consecutive wins to take down quick-play specialist Alireza Firouzja. Arjun will face Magnus Carlsen in semis. In the other semifinal matchup, Wesley So will face Hikaru Nakamura.

2/6/2023 – A fourth consecutive win at the Munich Grand Prix left Alexandra Kosteniuk 1½ points ahead of her closest chasers in the standings. On Sunday, the runaway leader defeated Tan Zhongyi with white after finding herself in some trouble during the opening phase of the game. Gukesh shines in super strong Airthings Masters Play-In

2/6/2023 – The six strongest performers of the Airthings Masters Play-In will join Magnus Carlsen and Wesley So in Division I of the tournament’s knockout phase starting Monday. Meanwhile, 16 players will battle it out in Division II, and 32 will play in Division III. In Friday’s Play-In, Dommaraju Gukesh was the clear winner of the 9-round Swiss after impressively collecting 7½ points. The Indian prodigy then went on to get a 2-0 victory over former world champion Vladimir Kramnik.

19-year-old Nurgyul Salimova wins Silver at Bulgarian Championship 2023

2/5/2023 – It is rare to see female players take part in the open section of national championships. But 19-year-old IM Nurgyul Salimova decided to do it at the 2023 Bulgarian Championship. She scored an impressive 6/9 and edged past two grandmasters (who also collected 6 points) to finish second overall.
