Giri's World Cup Struggle - The Underdog

9/6/2023 – The World Cup had it's fair share of underdog surprises in the first round. Robert Ris decided to pick a game from round three, though! Anish Giri faced Nijat Abasov, and in the tiebreaker, the GM from Azerbaijan played aggressive moves, which caused a lot of trouble for Giri. Ris shows us exactly, how the 150 points weaker player won impressively.

The exodus of Russian grandmasters continues

9/6/2023 – Apart from Kirill Alexeenko (to Austria) and Nikita Vitiugov (to England), the FIDE transfer list shows several other prominent Russian grandmasters who have left their federation after Russia invaded Ukraine. Evgeny Alekseev now plays for Israel and Sanan Sjugirov is the new number one in Hungary.

FIDE World Women's Team Championship 2023 starts in Bydgoszcz, Poland

Dommaraju Gukesh, Teimour Radjabov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (pictured) and Vincent Keymer are the co-leaders. 30 years ago: Two World Championship matches in the same year

9/5/2023 – 1993 was a particularly memorable year in chess history. Short and Kasparov had decided to leave FIDE and organise their World Championship match on their own, and FIDE, with its then President Campomanes, then organised an alternative World Championship match with Karpov and Timman. But this was not under a good star. During the opening ceremony pyrotechnics set fire to a banner on the stage.

The FIDE World Women's Team Championship starts in Bydgoszcz

9/5/2023 – Tuesday is the official start of the Women's World Cup in Bydgoszcz. The first two rounds will be played on Wednesday. 12 teams are taking part and the tournament will be played with a preliminary round in two groups, followed by a knockout system. FIDE has announced the line-ups and the draw for the groups.

Ju Wenjun claims victory at Tata Steel India Blitz

9/5/2023 – In the rapid section of the Tata Steel India Tournament, Ju Wenjun was outscored by Divya Deshmukh. In blitz, however, the women’s world champion was the strongest and won with 12½/ out of 18 points, finishing ahead of Humpy Koneru and Harika Dronavalli. | Photo: Vivek Sohani

FIDE ratings September 2023

9/4/2023 – On 1st September FIDE published its new rating list. Magnus Carlsen is still the clear number one, although he only gained 4 rating points by winning the prestigious World Cup. Carlsen tops the list with a rating of 2839 points, 53 points ahead of Fabiano Caruana, who has replaced Hikaru Nakamura as world number 2.

9/4/2023 – On August 6th, to celebrate GM Helmut Pfleger's eightieth birthday, octogenarian puzzle master Werner Keym submitted two very clever little problems in two German newspapers. Carlsen beats Firouzja in tough match, wins Generation Cup

9/4/2023 – After beating Alireza Firouzja by a convincing 3-0 score in the winners’ bracket final of the Generation Cup, Magnus Carlsen saw the youngster setting up a rematch by winning the losers’ bracket. In the Grand Final, a much more hard-fought encounter was also won by Carlsen, who defeated Firouzja with black in the Armageddon decider.

The 17-year-old from Maharashtra outscored some of the strongest women players in the world to finish in sole first place with 7 out of 9 points. Generation Cup: Carlsen overpowers Firouzja

9/2/2023 – Magnus Carlsen won the winners’ final of the Julius Baer Generation Cup with a smooth 3-0 victory over Alireza Firouzja. The Norwegian has thus reached the Grand Final set to take place on Sunday. His opponent will be the winner of the losers’ bracket, where Denis Lazavik and Nodirbek Abdusattorov will first play in the semifinals on Saturday; the winner will then face Firouzja.
