French Championships: Gozzoli and Hejazipour clinch titles

8/30/2023 – Yannick Gozzoli and Mitra Hejazipour are the new champions of France. Both won their maiden national titles. The French Championships 2023, 16-player knockout tournaments held in open and women’s sections, took place on August 18-27 in Alpe d’Huez. Gozzoli beat Romain Edouard in the final of the open, while Iranian-born Hejazipour got the better of Deimante Daulyte-Cornette among the women.

8/30/2023 – The Chess Federation of Russia has lost another top player. Nikita Vitiugov, who played under the FIDE flag after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, has transferred to the English Chess Federation, where he now occupies the first place in the federation’s ratings list.

8/28/2023 – After arriving from Baku and resting the first day, R Praggnanandhaa continued where he left off at the FIDE World Cup 2023. The sensational teenager scored four wins in-a-row for WR Chess at FIDE World Rapid Teams 2023. Meanwhile GM D Gukesh (Kompetenzakademie Allstars, 2629) faced the 14th world champion, GM Vladimir Kramnik (Chess Pensioners, 2739) for the first time in an over-the-board rated game. Remembering Aleksandar Matanovic (1930-2023)

8/25/2023 – In May 2022 the then world's oldest grandmaster, Yuri Averbakh, died at the age of 100. Since then, until two weeks ago, the 'title' of the world's oldest grandmaster was held by Aleksandar Matanovic. On 9 August 2023 Matanovic, one of the leading players of the Yugoslav golden era, died in Belgrade at the age of 93. Magnus Carlsen “completes” chess as he bags World Cup title

8/24/2023 – Magnus Carlsen has won it all. The world number one beat Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu in tiebreaks to win the FIDE World Cup for the first time in his career. After his victory, the Norwegian noted that he will not attempt to recover the World Championship title unless there is a major change in the format, especially regarding the shortening of time controls.
