FIDE has announced qualifiers for the World Cup 2011

7/15/2011 – "FIDE gave me a wildcard for the World Cup!" wrote GM Peter Heine Nielsen. "Thanks a lot for your help, Vladica, Jeff and Fred. Can't tell how much I appreciate that." It is, PH assumes, the result of a series of articles we published in April, and the support they generated. The World Cup will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk from August 26 to 21 September 2011. In his second example GM Müller shows us how in a "wrong rook pawn" ending the defender can often hope to construct a fortress, and how this can be overcome by the attacker. Breaking news: World Championship 2012 in Chennai

7/13/2011 – There was a bid from Russia, but now the Tamil Nadu Government has placed a winning bid for the Chess World Championship match between reigning Champion Viswanathan Anand and Challenger Boris Gelfand. The match will take place in April or May of 2012, the total budget is Rs. 20 crores (= 3.2 million Euros or US $4.5 million). Press release.

Marija and Kosara's project 'Children in Chess'

7/13/2011 – The two Serbian sisters Marija and Kosara Stojanovic are on a mission to help hearing impaired children, and young people with mental disabilities, to find pleasure and enjoyment in chess. In their pilot project they conduct classes once a week, and organise simultaneous exhibitions and outdoor events. Wonderful work that needs to be supported – or simply emulated by others. Eleven-year-old Kazakh gains WIM

7/12/2011 – Zhansaya Abdumalik already has three junior world championship titles under her belt. Recently she won an international tournament in Indonesia among girls under 20 years of age as well, which gave her the title of Women's International Master and a heavy boost in her rating. Howell leads in 5th Leiden Chess Tournament

7/12/2011 – British GM David W.L. Howell is in the lead in this nine-round Dutch GM Open with a perfect 4.0/4 score. He is followed by six players on 3.5 points. At the start of the event there was a rapid chess exhibition between legendary Dutch GM Jan Timman and current Dutch Champion Anish Giri – it ended 1.0:1.0. Bologan: Beating the Sicilian: A Grandmaster’s repertoire

7/12/2011 – For many years GM Viktor Bologan has been the number one in Moldava and has represented his country in nine Chess Olympiads. In 2003 he first of all won the Aeroflot Open and then the famous Dortmund Tournament, ahead of Kramnik and Anand. Edward Winter's Chess Explorations (65)

7/10/2011 – The Editor of Chess Notes looks at a topic often neglected by chess historians: the origins of FIDE, the world governing body. As is well known, the Fédération Internationale des Echecs was founded in Paris in 1924. What is less widely realized is that at first it was not called FIDE at all, but FIE. Moreover, the Federation was created in great haste, and almost without preparation.

Isek Aquamatch wins Turkish Isbank Chess League

Video: Thompson awarded the Japan Prize in California

7/8/2011 – In April Ken Thompson, the father of Unix and the computer language C, was due to receive the Japan Prize in Tokyo. Unfortunately the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami made that impossible. In May the prize was awarded at Google headquarters in California. The ceremony was taped and Ken spoke to the audience. See if you can lead a meaningful life without having heard his alligator story.

Turkish League: Isek Aquamatch Sport Club leads

7/6/2011 – After eight rounds ISEK Aquamatch Sport Club became the sole leader of the championship with fifteen points. The team won seven matches with only one draw. The competition continues without abate with its unique format in which the teams consist of top GMs, a female board, and U14 and U16 youth categories all rolled into one. Giri, Peng win Dutch Championships with record scores

7/5/2011 – Seventeen-year-old Anish Giri scored a thumping 7.5/9 points, two full points ahead of his nearest rival, with a performance of 2849. Anish stands to gain 16 points from this tournament in the next FIDE rating list. In the women's section Peng Zhaoqin finished with 9.0/10, three points ahead of her nearest rival. Gawain Jones wins Commonwealth Championship on tiebreak

7/5/2011 – Jones defeated Abhijit Gupta in the final round of the Commonwealth & South African Open Chess Championships in Ekurhuleni to record an impressive total of 9.5/11 and secure the title of 2011 Commonwealth Chess Champion. In doing so he edged out compatriot Nigel Short on tie-break whilst GM David Smerdon of Australia made a later charge to get bronze. Final report and videos.
