Round 9
For the 5th time since 2014, a tournament is held in Shamkir, Azerbaijan in memory of Vugar Gashimov (July 24, 1986 - January 11, 2014). Gashimov belonged to the absolute elite in chess. At his best, in November 2009, he was sixth in the world rankings. He battled brain cancer throughout his adulthood, which ultimately forced his retirement from competitive chess in 2012. With his friendly character, Gashimov won many friends during his career.
Scarcely any world champion has managed to captivate chess lovers to the extent Carlsen has. The enormously talented Norwegian hasn't been systematically trained within the structures of a major chess-playing nation such as Russia, the Ukraine or China.
Commentary by GM Ljubomir Ljubojević and GM Igor Khenkin
Tournament details
