Let endgame expert Dr Karsten Müller show and explain the finesses of the world champions. Although they had different styles each and every one of them played the endgame exceptionally well, so take the opportunity to enjoy and learn from some of the best endgames in the history of chess.

Poll: The best endgame of 2018

At the end of the year, we again invite our readers to vote for the player of the year, the female player of the year, the game of the year, the combination of the year, the endgame of the year, and for the "newcomer" of the year.

For every poll, our editorial team made nominations — which are, of course, subjective even though selected by a panel. To make things easier we whittled down the candidates, and we know some of you might miss your favourites — this is just one of many possible lists.

Here we want to find the best endgame of the year 2018. Karsten Müller has selected some of the best endgames for our shortlist below. Now make your choice! What is the best combination of 2018?

My favorite is not even there. It would have been the WCh game 5 endgame. Well, at least the analysis to it where Black had the study-like win.

The Korobov-Sutovsky game is missing from the game snippets shown, while the Jakovenko-Fedoseev game is displayed twice.

There was a brilliant save by Wesley So against Anand... I think it was a rapid game but So hung on beautifully in a Queen and Pawn ending with Anand having an extra pawn. So managed in a rapid game what most would struggle with even in a classical time format!

Carlsen-Karjakin from Sinquefield Cup 2018 should be on the list.
