FIDE July 2006 Rating Lists

In the top 100 players, men and women alike, we see Veselin Topalov at the top, a full 34 points ahead of his nearest rival. This reminds us of Garry Kasparov, who for the first time in decades is not on the list, due to retirement and inactivity. It is astounding how Topalov has been able to fill the vacant berth and put such a clear distance between himself and the rest of the world.

Obviously the FIDE world champion is playing extremely well and also looking after his appearance schemes very carefully. Anand has probably been too active in this rating segment, having played almost twice as many games as Topalov. Armenian GM Levon Aronian has gained another 21 points and is now just 18 points shy of Anand. Vladimir Kramnik came back from a protracted illness to display the highest performance of any player at the Turin Chess Olympiad. He is now in fourth place, 18 points behind Aronian.

Other noteworthy players:

  • Michael Adams is back in the top ten after gaining 12 points.
  • Ruslan Ponomariov lost 17 points to drop from 6 to 13.
  • Shakhriyar Mamedyarov continues to climb, having gained 23 to rise to 12.
  • David Navarra has gained an astounding 61 (!) points from 36 (!) games climbed from 50 to 14 (!).
  • Comeback GM Gata Kamsky has gained 26 points at the Olympiad and MTel and now occupies place 20.
  • 16-year-old Sergey Karjakin has ascended from place 45 to 27, while his 15-year-old rival Magnus Carlsen climbed from from 63 to 34. Both are wonder boys.
  • FM Vladimir Afromeev is the only non-GM in the top 100. He is 52 years old and occupies place 97.

Top 50 women

In the women's section Judit Polgar was occupied with her second pregnancy and played just one game. She remains on top of the list (and is currently number 17 overall in the world). India's Koneru Humpy is second, 162 points behind Judit. Humpy herself is 14 points ahead of the very determined Alexandra Kosteniuk. Veteran Pia Cramling has climbed to fourth, with former FIDE world champion Andoaneta Stefanova a single point behind in fifth. Remarkable is the appearance of Women's FM Hou Yifan on this list at the age of just 12 years and four months. Hou is just 29 points behind her compatriot Xu Yuhua, who is the reigning women's world champion, and 12 points ahead of Zhu Chen, the former women's world champion.
