Topalov overtakes Kramnik in FIDE rankings

by ChessBase
1/3/2005 – For almost a decade we have grown used to three players topping the world chess rankings: Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik. Now Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria has taken over place three. Kasparov barely managed to keep above the 2800 mark, with Anand is just 18 points behind. Details...

In the January 1st 2005 rating list Garry Kasparov managed to keep above the 2800 mark – by just four points. He was dragged below it by a disastrous performance at the European Club Cup but managed to make good with a brilliant win at the Russian Super-Final.

Indian superstar Vishy Anand has narrowed the gap to Kasparov further by scoring well at the Calvià Chess Olympiad (8/11). He is now just 18 points behind the perennial leader. One good performance, e.g. at the Wijk aan Zee tournament at the end of the month, and Anand could produce the biggest sensation of the year.

Veselin Topalov has now overtaken Vladimir Kramnik, breaking open the decade-old threesome of Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik. Actually Topalov's rating has remained unchanged since the last period, since he played no rated games. But Kramnik lost six points by drawing his Dannemann world championship match in Brissago. Peter Leko gained six points to remain in hot contention for the number three spot in the world rankings.

Finally we must congratulate Etienne Bacrot, who is as far as we know the first French player to enter the top ten club.

In the following lists you can click on the names of the players to access their Personal FIDE Cards. These include the national ranking, full individual calculation reports and previous top lists where the players have appeared. All data was collected and processed by FIDE.com.
