European Youth Championships 2006

Herceg Novi, Montenegro

The European Youth Chess Championship was stage by the Serbia and Montenegro Chess Federation (SMCF), which invited all European Chess Federations affiliated to FIDE to participate. Each federation could register one player in each of the Under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 categories for boys and girls.

The event took place in Herceg Novi, a coastal town in Montenegro, with a population of 17,000. It has a very turbulent history with numerous attacks and conquests. The region is famous for its natural beauty and its mild Mediterranean climate, with 200 sunny days per year. The average temperature from May to September is about 25°C, with sea temperatures varying between 22–26°C.
