"I can't breathe", says the king

Epaulette (or epaulet mate) is a checkmate where a king is prevented from escaping check by its own pieces. The most common Epaulette mate involves the king on its back rank, trapped between two rooks. The name derives from a visual similarity to ornamental shoulder pieces worn on military uniforms.
